Rigo vs Loma. No shame in losing to a bigger, younger guy with the quality of Loma, especially if you have an injured hand, but the way he did it... Never showed any fight in him... It wasn't me in there and I can't know how things really were for him, but still left a bad taste.
Ruiza vs AJ 2 and Douglas vs Holy were both very disappointing performances. Two guys with clear talent that seemed content to just collect the (huge) paycheck.
One of the most disappointing for me was Sergei Liakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs. Lamon Brewster had a really exciting heavyweight run when he was WBO champ. And his defense against Liakhovich was just so much fun to watch. A really outstanding heavyweight fight. After Sergei got off the floor to win, I was really looking forward to his heavyweight reign. He was 29 with a 23-1 record and the WBO belt. At the time, I think all the heavyweight champs were from Eastern Europe - Liakhovich, Wlad, Maskaev and Valuev. Sergei was one of the younger ones. Seemed like he had a lot of upside. And when he made his first defense against Briggs, who was sort of a train wreck even then, it didn't seem like it was going to be a problem. But, damn, what an awful fight and an awful performance. Just all the way around. And Liakhovich never recovered from that loss. He even got shut out over 12 against Valuev after that. Wasn't even competitive. There wasn't a lot of boxing websites in 2006. I didn't speak his language. So I was just wondering at the time if he was on drugs or what? It was such a great win over Brewster. He just never could repeat that. Not only did he not repeat it against Briggs, he didn't really even fight back much.
Wlad against Fury was one of the most shameful performances ever by a champion that I have witnessed in my 34 years watching boxing
People dont Trinidad any creditfor Oscar shutting down his jab/offense after being ahead. It's the opponent making him pay and also fatigue. In Tito's case he adjusted his right hand. Rather than using it as a power punch he threw it quick and straight like a very hard jab. It blunted DelaHoya's own jab and he abandoned it. Broke hi is timing.
Wlad was never that good. He lorded over probably the worst division maybe ever. Certainly modern times. Even with that he practically made a farce out of his fight by holding after every exchange. He was a big roided out robot. He would have been Tommy Morrison level in the 90s. Golota would have bounced him around on his best day. It would depend on Wlad getting stopped before Andrew quit for no reason. With that said. Wlad nice guy. Decent guy it seems.
