Johnny 'The Entertainer' Nelson.... Seriously though, I saw Benn in a few awful snoozefests, so I reckon in the modern era, Shea Neary and PJ Gallagher are fighting it out for one and two.
ive never seen them fight, any fights i should check out? johnny nelson couldnt have picked a less appropriate nickname.his book was hilarious though
Gallagher/Charlie Sheppard and Neary/Micky Ward (yes, that Micky Ward) would show you what both were about.
Neary Vs Ward is a cracking war. Never even heard of it until i couldn't sleep and watched KOTV classics.
i'm more impressed with a entertaining fighter who reaches and performs at a high level then a limited "exciting fighter" in other words quality before excitement because i saw a couple of bums going at it the other day but the any form of skill was non-existent ben naz (vs kelley was sensational) calzaghe- i always enjoy watching and apart from the hopkins fight, which was down to hopkins spoiling is always in very fascinating fights (vs kessler)
In that case the Ragamuffin Man Lloyd Honeyghan has to be up there. And purely as a total enigma who could fight like a virtual pound for pound top 10 fighter, or a local journeyman (and very often both, in the same fight: I give you the two Colin Jones fights as evidence) Kirkland Laing....
Gomez was generally good value for money. Neary was when I saw him but I wouldn't have seen a lot of his fights. Naz was entertaining no denying that. Kirland Laing (having watched dvds) was in some really good scraps. He always seemed to be banjoing someone or getting banjoed. I'd say almost 70% of his fights ended in KO's
If you are going down that path, Paul 'Scrap Iron' Ryan was mighty fun, a face first brawler who could punch, but had the punch resistance of a 10 year old..... Bomber Bruno too, gave for value for the bang, with only two of his forty five fights lasting to the final bell.
Yeah thats the route I was going. I mean we all get our kicks out of top notch boxing performances and techincal ability but I was going with a real value for money fighter. A lad who always made it interesting and sort of edge of the seat 'what the **** is going to happen next' type of fighters.
Lloyd Honeyghan had a pretty exciting couple of years after the beat Curry. Unfortuneatly he got a bit carried away and it proved his downfall against a good counterpuncher like Marlon Starling. He was never the same after that fight.
Sure, he won the Vaca rematch and beat Chung, but IMO, Lloyd was never the same post Mad Dog Hatcher.
