I watched UFC for the first time last week. It was brutal at times almost to the point of being a little bit sick and seedy, yet I did enjoy it for the most part.

But for me its a totally different sport to boxing, and honestly don't see why they are treated as 'rivals'. UFC is somwhere between 'ok' and 'good' whereas boxing is 'great'.

For me I think I would have to say Benn v McClennan as well. Benn was the fighter who first got me intrested in fighting and I remember watching that fight absolutely mesmerised. I was only a kid at the time so didn't really appreciate that Benn was a big underdog. I have seen it a few times since but it's difficult to watch knowing what happened to Gerald. I have a book on the fight called 'War, Baby: The Glamour of Violence' by Kevin Mitchell which is a really good read if ever you come across it.

Naz v Kelley I can never tire of watching. He brought so much entertainment to boxing. His ring entrance was legendary but the fight more than upstaged it.

Lewis v Klitschko was a really entertaining fight. Although Lewis was far past his best that night I don't think I ever left the edge of my seat.

I think someone mentioned Arthur v Gomez earlier in this thread and that is a good shout as well. A really great domestic tear up!

UFC sucks. It takes skill but so does juggling. I was a 50-50 fan up until recently- now i realise its 90% just roidheads wrestling and punching like amateurs. Boxing takes more skill and is far more pleasing to watch. But boxing can learn from UFC. The way the fighters are promoted and matched and are also so accesible to fans. Boxing needs a overseeing body like the UFC.

Great fight it was, but I honestly think for entertainment and excitement the Sanchez and Bungu fights were probablly 'better' than Naz-Kelley.

of course it is a v.different sport to the noble art.
the problem i have with it,although it is moderately technical,is when you are "taken down",your opposition can rain blows down on you from what seems to be an un-defendable situation.
unfair advantages in sport kind of take the sport out of it for me.
although willing to listen to the other side of the argument ,,if there is one?

Gomez-Arthur is a personal favourite of mine, very rare I get squeamish and I'm a Gomez fan - but I was pleading at the TV for Arthur to get his right hand up

I've never seen so many brutal left hooks land in such a short space of time

And the atmosphere was literally crackling

    Amazing fight

Well first of all I would say it isn't an unfair advantage if someone had to work to get to that advantageous position in the first place. That's a case of either you made a mistake or the other guy is better than you.

For defending 'ground and pound' as it's called you can purely cover up normally as if you were standing and use head movement to deflect the blows. You can tie the person up by either grabbing their arms, wrists or clinching, therefore nullifying their attack and wait for the ref to stand the fight back up. You can buck and move and scramble in an attempt to get back up or transition so that you are in a better position. You can (if you possess the skills) attempt a submission. In fact a lot of fighters who come from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background prefer to be in that position. It's where they feel comfortable and where their arsenal of attacks are most effective.

Also of course you can start striking back but that's rare (and stupid more often than not).

The Sanchez fight was every bit as exciting as the Kelley one, you're right. I only picked the Kelley one ahead of it because of the buzz of it being his big debut on US turf.

The Bungu fight is great but unfortunately for me I never saw the fight live and it always takes a little bit of the gloss away when you're watching a fight and already know the outcome.

Not the greatest fight of all time but I do like Napoles - Stracey (my era really). The way that John picked himself up off of the deck in the first to take the win in front of such a hostile crowd is a truly great performance. Any of you young uns who haven't seen it should get to YouTube and check it out.

I have seen that fight. Great comeback from Stracey, Napoles took the first couple of rounds IIRC and as you say the comeback from Stracey in front of a hostile crows was tremendous.

The stoppage was great as well, couldn't believe Napoles was still on his feet.
