I think someone must have had hold of his shorts outside the ring, Napoles took 8-10 flush shots on the ropes, all of which rocked his head back. Awesome. The fight was held in a bullring which I thought was quite fitting

For me, as a scottish boxing fan then these are my favourite fights in living memory.

Gary Jacobs losing to Pernell Whittaker by UD.

Yup, the scotsman faced the P4P no1 at the time Pernell Whittaker, floored Sweet pea & lasted the distance despite tasting the canvas himself twice in the last round. people talk about Hatton as a great here, but hatton didnt do as well as Gary Jacobs when the scotsman faced the no1 P4P of his era.

Theres plenty more exciting fights, but no scotsman since then has ever faced the no1 P4P fighter, & to this day I still watch & applaud Gary jacobs performance in that fight.
& Im just going by my own memory, that fight is one I remember in my lifetime. Im not into talking about fights that I wasnt around to enjoy at the time like I was there.

Unlike many posters on ESB nowadays, especially the so called Naz fans who didnt have the slightest clue when I posted a question about one of his victims a short while ago...
Trouble is, we got a bunch of kids posting here nowadays who like to act like they are as old in the head as Larry Merchant!

    Nice post Dunky.
I'm only 24 and know half of what most do on here, however I genuinely do love the sport and try to build my knowledge. I know what I know and if thats not good enough then so be it. I've had a couple of arguments where I think someones just gone to boxrec, read the result of a fight and just come back at me with that, not even knowing how the fight panned out !

Thanks Dan. Im not just bashing on people who arent as old as me or dont know as much, its just that in the recent past there has been a decline in quality on here, lots of noobs posting a lot of **** & acting like they have infinite knowledge, all cos they can access Boxrec.
But hey, Im getting off the subject matter here.

What I mean to say is, all hail Gary Jacobs! He may not have picked up the alphabet titles that Hatton did, but by **** Jacobs gave the p4p no1 at the time one helluva scare that Hatton never did. As I say, hes a forgotten hero.

I know of the whitaker fight because I love Whitaker, think he was a superb boxer but didn't Jacobs also lose against Buddy McGirt or am I thinking of someone else ?

Jacobs lost to McGirt, yes. You been checking on boxrec Dan?;) Once again, jacobs gave another great a helluva fight.
As i say, Jacobs never picked up the alphabet titles of so many revered boxers of today, but when he faced the very best of the era, jacobs did himself proud, knocking down Whittaker before he ran out of gas & tasted the canvas himself but still lasted the distance.

Its what you judge as a great performance I suppose, & comparing Gary Jacobs against Pernell Whittaker to Hatton v Floyd or Pac, you have to say Gary Jacobs put in a great performance, in comparison. & for that reason alone, I class Gary Jacobs as a forgotten hero.

Well thats as good a reason as any to hold him up in high regard. What you reckon to McEwan then ? I watched the Vera fight at around 4am on Five (Not live it was around 3/4 days later). I think he looks good and hope he does well there. Its nice to see a British fighter go abroad to learn his trade. I think a lot of British prospects never live up to there potential due to the fact that there always fighting at home, infront of there crowd, against the same kind of crowd pleasing opponents.

Where Jabobs does suffer (and you know I'm a fan of his Dunky) is that dispite great perfomances against Pernell and McGirt he didn't actually beat too many world class fighters and also has a few loses at fringe world level/ Euro level.

To be fair, he did not beat any world class fighters!

I was a little disappointed with the McGirt fight myself, Jacobs was primed and I felt was going to upset the American. With hindsight that was because I underrated McGirt post Taylor, after grossly overrating him, after the Frank Warren win. Back in the days when Frank was an undefeated American 140lbs world rated prospect!;)

That said, I still had a lot of time for the Scot and thought he gave Whitaker hell, knocking him down (no matter what the ref thought) and being competitive.
