I think the two of them could vie for the title..with Manny Pac running third....but Pac, should he continue his winning ways and retire, then he could take teh (hooray for Foreman Hooooooooook) crown.
Sugar Ray Robinson Sugar Ray Leonard Oscar De la Hoya 3 guys that if you were to mention them on the streets you're likely to find someone who knows them.
by decade 00s-Gans 10s-Greb 20s-B. Leonard 30s-Armstrong 40s-SRR 50s-Archie Moore(should I count his HW run)? If not SRR again. 60s-Emile Griffith or Eder Jofre(hard to say, could use insight here) 70s-Duran 80s-Ray Leonard 90s-De La Hoya 00s-Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.
My mum knows nothing about boxing, and has heard of neither. The two fighters she has heard of, that are non British, and non Heavyweights, are Marvin Hagler and Ray Robinson. She also mentioned Raging Bull, but could only think of DeNiro rather than LaMotta.
You may be right, but Duran was in the center of probably the most acclaimed MW divsion ever. Chavez although worshipped in Mexico and an ATG boxer for that matter was not even close to being in the world spotlight as Duran.
Jake LaMotta is very well known outwith boxing fans because of raging bull obviously. I'd probably say overall though it's sugar ray robinson.
Probably depends where you do the survey. In the U.S.: Robinson. Latin America: Monzon? Duran? Napoles? Chavez? Gomez? Far East: Pacman maybe England: SRR or Turpin France: Cerdan Africa: Tiger Australia: Fenech or Rose
Turpin takes a hit for the way he died (he committed suicide, but his daughter followed him up to the room, and he shot her too, thankfully she survived). Barry McGuigan has to be up there.
