Evander against Bowe the first time was the first one that came to mind for me - felt pretty choked up for Holyfield when he was leaving the ring that night The very next one I thought of was Ezzard Charles against Rocky Marciano the first time - the above picture is pretty brutal - I don't think I've seen somebody come through quite so much and still be well in control of himself enough to mount great offenses himself - come to think of it Don Cockell aswell is another who was immensly brave in the face of an hellacious pummeling - questions have to be asked about the ref in that one
Just stumbled across this site a few weeks ago, very impressed with you guys on this forum - anyway, my intial offerings. Wilde / Villa Turpin / Robinson II Cerdan / LaMotta Dauthuille / LaMotta Cooper / Clay Jones ( Colin ) / Liang I & II Jones / McCroy I & II McAuley / Bassa I Perhaps, Hearns / Barklay I
That fight is a perfect example. Your description of that beating in your last Ketchel article is sickeningly vivid and graphic. It raised my appreciation of both Ketchel and Papke.
Save the knockdown, he lost just about every other round in that fight. I'm not sure I'd classify it as the Most Heroic or Most Admirable losing performance. Frazier's performance against Ali in '75 is a good example. George Foreman against Evander Holyfield is another good example. Billy Conn against Joe Louis is great example. But Dempsey vs Tunney falls short.
God I just remembered Tony Zale bowing out to Marcel Cerdan - Zale was freakishly tough?? How he could take some of the punches he took is beyond me - what a brave brave warrior - very poignant ending sequence also
Too many to mention. I'll throw in a vote for Holyfield against Bowe 1 (and his showing in fight 3 wasn't too shabby either).
