It's easily Joe Calzaghe for me now, but he wasn't really a high profile fighter during his career. At least not here in America. From time to time his picture would pop up in the belt holders screen before a fight, but that's it.

I've never been impressed with his technique or his resume. I will say that he laid down an impressive ass beating of Jeff Lacy, though.

yeah, I'm really surprised to see Kessler and Hagler in here. Kessler makes good fights, has a punch, toughness, and a technical style, and is always "in" the fight. Hagler could do it all with facility, and only looked ordinary in a few fights against great fighters. Mugabi really didn't trouble him as much as purported, when you look at what Mugabi was doing to everyone else he fought up to that point.

    I have a longish list.

Bradley tops it, with Devon Alexander. Bradley is just awful to watch and usually his victories are not from clean punching but from something else.

For me, Juanma Lopez always seemed a bit unimpressive compared to his early reputation, but the it blew my mind when Cabellero made it to pound for pound lists, that guy WAS TERRIBLE. I never scored a fight for Cabellero when he didn't get the KO.

Broner has looked poor against guys like Ponce De Leon, who was himself at times clearly less than skillful.

The most dominant fighter who didn't impress me but still won most of his fights was Kostya Tszyu, who seemed very effective but somewhat ordinary for his reputation.

Calzaghe has a very ugly, amateurish looking style -- sometimes it looks like he's flailing or slapping and leaving himself open while he does so. It looks even worse when he misses:

That being said...he manages to actually make it work for him. He overwhelms his opponents with the slapping and throws them off balance with it. When I look past his technique I have to admit that he has quick hands, good movement, impressive workrate and stamina, and heart. He also has a habit of making his opponent uncomfortable and forcing them into his type of fight. (Which is why I found the Hopkins match interesting, as Hopkins is well known for spoiling and throwing his opponent off in different ways.)

Calzaghe's resume still doesn't impress me though. His best wins are Kessler and old Hopkins, and the latter fight was pretty close, with some scoring it for Hopkins.

i admittedly get a little touchy when people make comments about lewis when they are clearly stupid. which it was. the point i made was valid, but yeah, should have left the last bit alone.

your post made me laugh. :good

Carlos Monzon is constantly built up as this imposing,heavy-handed destroyer with a ramrod jab,but the guy was an arm-puncher with average power and a probing, relatively light-hitting jab.Incredibly boring to watch, for the most part, too.

Guy had certain underrated qualities about him like his ability to control distance and his defense(he really wasn't that easy to hit with consistency) but a major disappointment overall.

Gotta be Kessler. Very vanilla in his style. Took 35+ fights to actually step up in competition. Got beat by Calzaghe, whupped by a Green Ward, and really only has good wins over C class fighters barring the Froch victory.

    Rocky Marciano
    Jack Dempsey
