Well if you put it like that then I would say that having superior footwork would be the biggest asset. Although good footwork is useless of course if you can't throw a decent punch.

But on a more fundamental level I would say the biggest asset to have would without doubt be superior judgement and control of distance, and timing.

znaak and avk47 make good pts. you really need to have a handle on where you are fighting when it comes to defense. the higher you go, the more precise the scoring is, simple as. i've seen matches where a person throws at least 5-1 the volume of the other, but all of those shots were doing nothing but landing on gloves...being blocked. should they be awarded for that? is there no merit to the defense blocking them? the skill involved in it? Well...

depends where you are. at a club show chances are a lot of those non scoring pts might be tallying up. if you are at a club show and facing a local, you for sure don't want to be using a technique of precise scoring and impressive defense. You need to overwhelm if for nothing more then provide sheer volume and aggression, scoring aside, to accommodate unwitting judges and a crowd that is against you. Volume can do this. But at a higher level, total different story.

I'd say most important skill in boxing is learning how to not be hit. Following closely by learning how to hit. Crazy, I know right? Bit of good judgment and common sense never hurts either.

In terms of attributes fitness is ahead of punching power, range of shots etc.

good defense, good stamina and a straight 1-2 will be a good basis

no one has pointed out the obvious yet, the most impotrant skill in amatuer boxing is the ability to land punches, whether that is countering, pressure etc

..... Unless you're throwing in bunches, your landed punches aren't going to mean **** if your opponent is throwing 3165465 punches at you

How exactly are you supposed to defend against those 3165465 punches without being scored against by judges? More offense? Not being their range? Since defense really depends on who's judging(blocked hits being scored etc.), Amateur bouts look messy sometimes cuz of this. Thats why Leonards flurries would screw his opponent over in the olympics. They were screwed going against Leonard anyways, but still.

When you say amateur? Do you mean Olympic style? Or do you mean like in Golden Gloves style?
I know most amateur (not Olympic) the winner is the generally guy who throws more punches. defense is sort of irrelevant. So for that it's all about stamina.

In Olympic style it's scored by landing a clean punch, and they are counted. It's much more like fencing or sport Tae Kwon Do. In this case defense will help you a great deal.

you dont have to always punch in bunches, you are most vulnerable when you are punching, you may have great defence, great footwork but all thay doesnt mean **** if you cant land a punch. You will never score if you cant land.

i dont understand what you mean, landing punches wont mean **** if you opponent throws 3535453225126 if you opponent is throwing them punches stand out of range, who says he is landing these punches just because he throws them. He still needs the ability to land them, anyone can throw that combo but how many can land it

Indeed. My second last opponent threw hundreds of punches but it was clear he barely landed any and got countered to death, judges aren't that blind they saw his head snap back between punches :D
