He missed Ingo because Ingo didn't get around to fighting him, not because he didn't want to fight Ingo. In fact, Liston's team was actively seeking a match with Johannson when Ingo chose journeyman Brian London instead and then retired after almost getting knocked out with 4 seconds left in the fight.

When Liston fought Zolley, Zolley was #2 in the division. It was after Patterson beat Ingo. When Liston fought Machen, Machen was #3 in the division, behind Zolley and Liston. The last two fights on the way to Patterson were because he'd already beat the other relevant obstacles in DeJohn (#7 when they fought), Williams (#6), and Valdes (#2).

That's like if someone today came along and beat Bakole, Zhang, Dubois, Kabayel, and Parker, snd then obliterated Usyk in a grand total of 105 seconds in two fights combined.

I'm not saying it's better than Ali or Usyk's run, but it's definitely significant.

 

Yeah but the head to head argument only works if you know for a fact that Fury, Joshua and Dubois would have beaten all those guys. I have serious doubts about Dubois doing it and the 30 something year old versions of Fury and Joshua weren’t as good as they were a few years earlier

And what Liston did would be more like beating Zurdo, Badou Jack, Chris Billam Smith, Cielsak, and Rozicki.

 

Fury had lost more than “ half a step. “ He was 35 years old, had only fought one time in 17 months and looked like absolute crap against a man who had never even fought in professional boxing. Never mind all the spells of taking time off and coming back again. And there’s Dubois who got stopped by a 36 year old prospect who never went anywhere. Now compare that to Tony Tucker who was 28 years old in stellar physical shape and had just beaten a top contender. Or Spinks who was a two division linear champion and had never even been floored. Expand upon that even further by looking at the convincing fashion that Tyson had beaten all six of these guys. To me it’s a no brainer

I disagree I'm more impressed with Tyson's list of names overall because it's 6 different opponents who were all world class Heavyweights and 2 of the fighters are considered ATGs in Spinks, Holmes.

Holmes was past his best yes but so was Fury and Tyson stopped Holmes in more impressive fashion.

Tyson destroying Spinks would've been the equivalent of Fury destroying Usyk it's a very good win.

Then you have....

Tony Tucker 34-0 world champion.

Tyrell Biggs undefeated gold medalist.

Pinklon Thomas former world champion.

Tony Tubbs former world champion.

 

That’s revisionist. I don’t know why you wrote all that knowing that I’d see right through it.

Dubois lost to a guy who would go on to beat the crap out of Parker and earn a spot in the top 5.

Fury has had plenty of fights where he looked crappy against lesser opposition. He’s literally done that since he was a prospect. And he, not surprisingly, came into the Usyk fight as a favorite and looked great for the first half of the fight to the point where I wonder if you watched it.

Spinks hadn’t been very active either, which you selectively omitted. And he was a small heavyweight whereas Fury is a giant.

If you think beating Buster Douglas and being lean makes you comparable in ability to any incarnation of Tyson Fury, I’d like to know what Fury did to upset you.

 

Fury was lineal and was more like 84 Holmes than the version who Tyson knocked out.

Biggs was worse than Dubois. All you have to do is watch the fight w Bey to see it. Tubbs was pretty fat and inactive.

And beating Fury again and Joshua again is obviously better than Tucker and Thomas.

As for beating Spinks, it’s a great win and is on par with Usyk outboxing Joshua the first time.

 

Yeah well I disagree with all of that. It doesn’t change the fact that the great Joe Joyce is now 16-4 at 39 years of age. Think it’s safe to say that he’s not the next George Foreman. Spinks was a 31 year old undefeated great who had never been floored and was beaten within seconds of the opening bell. Anthony Joshua’s last fight before Usyk came nearly a year earlier against the ancient Kubrat Pulev. And the one prior to THAT was a full year earlier in a rematch against a 268 lbs Ruiz whom he never should have lost to in the first place.

Holmes was coming off 2 losses to Spinks yes but pretty much everyone felt he'd beaten Spinks in their 2nd fight. It's also significant that Holmes had a good run in the 90s after the Tyson loss and was never off his feet again despite fighting the likes of Mercer, Holyfield, McCall, in his 40s.

Stopping Holmes who was only stopped once in 75 fights is very significant victory considering he's also rated amongst top 5 Heavyweights of all time.

I'm just more impressed with the 6 different world class opponents of Tyson overall rather than Usyk's 6 win streak against 3 opponents. Tyson also has 2 ATG opponents in Spinks, Holmes, and 2 undefeated opponents in Tucker, Spinks.

Not to mention out of all those 6 opponents 5 of them were current or former world champions that's impressive.

 

Fury went life and death with a 37 year old mma fighter right before he fought Usyk and no, this will not be thrown under the rug, Fury did it to himself and he won't live it down.

Was already past his prime similar to Holmes with evidence being going life and death with Wilder in fight 3 despite destroying him in fight 2, being 35, and he doesn't have a resume or champion statistics as good as Holmes. Fury's best win was 9 years prior to the Usyk fights and his prime was likely in the rear view mirror as soon as he went on a drug binge and fluctuated in weight by 150 pounds. There's no way he was the same as prime, it's biology. Furys only good win post Wlad is Wilder who himself has only 1 good win against contender Ortiz. Ortiz wasn't even a champion, unless you want to count Stiverne, but how much does this really help ? Fury beat Whyte too, but did Whyte beat any top guy with a resume as good as McCalls ? The answer is no, and I remember you voting for McCall when asked who has the better record between him and Anthony Joshua.

Bruno beat McCall years after Tyson destroyed him and add Coetzee too. Holmes beat Ray Mercer years after Tyson despite already being past his prime and not even being a champion when he fought Tyson.

Extend the streak to 8 fights and the answer changes completely. 6 is a weird number to pick and 8 is as well.

 

I'd like to throw in Jack Dempsey's run from 1919 to 1923. He beat Jess Willard to win the title. He then kayoed Billy Miske, Bill Brennan and Georges Carpentier. He followed that up with a points win over Tommy Gibbons and a KO of Luis Angel Firpo. Unfortunately the Ring Ratings didn't start until 1924 but all six opponents were ranked very highly in the pre-Ring heavyweight rankings which @mattdonnellon did in 2018.
