The fighter that impressed me the most on the Canelo ticket was Marcos Maidana. Santa Cruz was good also but I saw a lot of improvement in Maidana, his jab was working, his movement, head and body was much improved. Garcia is doing a great job and I for one would like to see a rematch with Alexander. Thoughts:
I say have one more bout to keep working on things with Garcia, then move back down to 140lbs to apply them. Some very interesting bouts there still.
He'll never beat Alexander a day in his life. He beat up SOTO KARASS guys. Soto Karass made Gabriel Rosado look like a killer. Karass is a punching bag.
Maidana demonstrated tremendous improvement when he nullified the speed, head movement, punching angles, and elite footwork of Soto-Karass.
In just a couple of months Robert Garcia has given Maidana a jab worthy of Holmes and slickness worthy of Whitaker. He made Soto-Karass look like a bum. A BUM!
Couldn't agree more, Manfred. Had to shake my head, if Maidona was the same one-dimensional bomb-thrower I'd seen before. Garcia's made a HUGE difference -- all for the good -- in every area. I was reconciled to the Neanderthal who clubbed people into submission; he sure-as-hell was exciting. But this Maidona 3.0, thanks to Garcia, (in a relatively brief time) is a REMARKABLE upgrade. Garcia deserves BIG BIG BIG props.
I don't think he was necessarily the most impressive though he did have the most exciting bout. He did look improved from a technical point of view but on the other hand at the time of the knockdown it looked like Maidana had lost the momentum and that he was in danger of fading and losing a decision or maybe even getting stopped. And though Soto is a diamond hard fringe contender he was absolutely hammered in the Jones rematch and he was torn to shreds by Gabriel Rosado, himself a low level fringe contender. Let's not get carried away.
This, and it was a close fight until the knockout. This is a guy Alfonso Gomez beat more convincingly.
El Chino was placing his punches so well last night. He does need more time to adjust to his current weight class though. He's going to realize his power alone can't win him fights in the same way as before. Very good work by Robert Garcia so far.
I love the work Maidana has done. dude was rolling slipping and roll countering Soto Karass. It was nice to see his development. He was even tying up on inside to change the pace.
