I think Marco is the best combination puncher...since Canizales actually popkins, who could have easily been my pick. ****in' beautiful offensive fighter. Marco is up there with the best combination punchers of the last 30 years...but Chavez is a bit better I think.
Raul Jibaro Perez was a brilliant combination puncher as well...extremely educated left hand work. You would probably like his style a lot if you can get hold of some of his better fights.
Combinations- Sugar Ray Robinson Hand Speed- Floyd Patterson for LW,HW. Punching Power- Pipino Cuevas Stamina- Carmen Basilio Punch Resistance- George Chuvalo
Cobb joked that the fists of Holmes couldn't take 15 rounds more of that kind of punishment when asked about a rematch, but it was no joke for Spinks when Willie "The Bull" absorbed so many of Michael's bombs that his hands were hurting. He was genuinely worried that he was going to fracture both of them if the referee hadn't intervened. The memory of his match with Taylor held him in good stead when he defended the LHW title against Eddie Davis, and he adapted accordingly when Eddie also took his best shots without flinching.
Combination Punching: Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ike Williams, Joe Louis Handspeed: Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson Punching Power: George Foreman, Joe Louis, Mike Tyson Stamina: Aaron Pryor, Henry Armstrong, Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran Punch Resistance: Jake LaMotta, Marvellous Marvin Hagler, Aaron Pryor
Combo Punching: Roy Jones Handspeed: Roy Jones Punching Power: McClellan/jackson Stamina: Armstrong/Calzaghe/Pryor Punch Resistance: loads of them
Seems a bit of a strange pick. Jones did more pot-shotting that combination punching. Not that he wasn't great at it when he did, but he didn't really do it with the regularity of e.g. Chavez.
Heavyweight: Speed: Patterson Combo Speed: Patterson Power: Foreman (nothing beats Jamaica to me), Lewis (Golata and Ruddock) Stamina: Frazier (Superfight 1) Chin: Chuvalo v.s. Foreman Heart: Frazier, Holyfield Non-Heavy Speed: Camacho Combo speed: Ray Leonard Power: Jackson, Foster, Hearns Stamina: Monzon Heart: Erik Morales Chin: Hagler
Combo Punching - Sugar Ray Robinson Handspeed - Meldrick Taylor Power - Julian Jackson Stamina - Aaron Pryor Chin - The marvellous one
Great shout, Tunney is very impressive, I know Fleaman thinks highly of him. I missed out defence, the best defence I have seen is Locche but the most well rounded defence is Pep
I don't think there really is a most well rounded defence. The majority of great defensive fighters were capable of employing a multitude of techniques.I find it tends to be other attriubutes and/or lack of them that dictates who ended up greater/getting hit more overall. Locche for instance could arguably look more impressive at times than someone like Canto or Whitaker, because heputs so much stock into defensive maneuvering first an foremost, at the expense of a consistent offense. It's harder to avoid getting hit when you are consistently trying to throw quality punches.
Well another word I would use for all round defence would be 'effective defence'. Locche was a wizard at making people miss but often did not take advantage of it. Pep for instance would make you miss and always take advantage of it, same as Whittaker, Zapata ot Benitez.
