I am a Hopkins guy so I like the pick. But Tarver and Pavlick came after the time frame listed, so they don’t weigh into this equation
Who of note do you feel Sanders and Brewster had beat before they faced Wlad? I think it's pretty clear that both Haye and Povetkin had done more before meeting Wlad than Sanders and Brewster had done before they did. Povetkin also did more afterwards. To me he's Wlad's standout opponent before Fury.
I also feel it's very close and could be argued from several perspectives. Hopkins has the longevity, and even though he had that draw (which I felt he actually won) and an NC, he emphatically beat everyone he faced during this period and he missed out on no one of note. That probably puts him ahead of Wlad for me, who didn't face Vitaly. The unquestioned dominance that Hopkins had outweighs his draw and NC for me when compared to Wlad. Roy's run spots both Hopkins's and Wlad's in terms of longevity and he also missed out on his standout competitor (DM). So it depends how much weight you place on his win over Ruiz and the spectacular manner of his wins over Griffin and Hill.
Hard for me to hold it against the Klits for not facing each other. It is the rare time I don’t discredit someone for not fighting their number one challenger. I have not fought my brother since I was 16 and he was 18....and no amount of money would make me do it, unless we were just goofing around. I do like Hops work slightly better than Wlad but I also feel the HW division is the hardest to sustain lengthy domination in, and very few have done it. And while I put RJJ 3rd man jumping to HW from 160 is impressive stuff even if it is Ruiz that he beat. Impressed the heck out of me and still does.
I don't hold it against Wlad. But even if we understand the reasons why he didn't face Vitaly, we can't pretend he beat him. The fact is that he didn't beat the best opponent out there and that has to effect how dominant he is seen as having been, even if the reasons are understandable.
I guess I forgot about Povetkin. But, even he was becoming pretty inactive and less impressive heading into his bout with Wlad. But, I still agree with you that at least Povetkin was a legitimate challenger.
I was going to post until I read this, spot on! Roy was the most impressive, and I'd have sure like to have seen better competition. A 30 year old Roy and Calzaghe would have been a good one
Jones and its not even close. a 30 year old Jones would have spanked Calzaghe and everyone knows it. Too fast .hit too hard. Im a big DM fan but Roy would have busted him up after 4 interesting rounds.
But, we are not contrasting what they might have done. Rather looking at what each did during a period where they were unbeaten for a stretch. What is it about Roys run that makes this a runaway?
I REALLY THINK PEOPLE VASTLY OVERATE HOP. DO YOU REALLY THINK HED STAND A CHANCE VS.MONZON,HAGLER,TIGER FULLMER,SERIOUSLY HES IN THE CLASS OF DOWNES, MINTER
Yes I do think he'd stand a chance , as a matter of fact I find Monzon to be highly overrated, and outside of a few blown up welters like Emile Griffith and Montequilla I don't recognize too many names on his resume, except may be Bennie Briscoe who I heard battled him to a draw in his own home town (you know what that means).. And Hagler, the Princess, if he let a ring rusted smaller man in Leanord get his panties in such a twist, I think the taller rangier Hopkins would shut him down ..Hagler would probably run away to Europe and refuse to fight ever again he'd be so humiliated
That really isn’t the question at all. It isn’t about what he might or might not have done. Why is his run less impressive than the other 2 this thread is discussing?
