Mayweather and Hopkins, in terms of mentality and discipline in the ring, are way ahead of anyone else. Mayweather is the best though, Hopkins has made some tactical errors in his career. Mayweather has made none, that I can think of. He has fought every fight with the best tact he could at the time.
Floyd & BHop, of course. I'd add Lennox Lewis, prime RJJ, and possibly Campillo. Not Ward. He has physical skills and decent smarts, but he's not the tactician of the others, above. Besides, he lets Jesus do his thinking for him, and that's never a good idea. :scaredas:
Bernard Hopkins. mayweather and whitaker have never had to account for someone who had the advantages of speed and power over them. Hopkins does it routinely. take mayweather's and whitaker's speed from them, and they would become much less effective, as that is the catalyst for much of their offensive and defensive proficiency. Hopkins cannot rely as heavily on speed and instead has to use other variables, such as distance, timing, footwork, traps, and other more subtle tactics.
True, Marquez has the skills and ring smarts to be almost untouchable, no doubt, but he doesn't pick his counters carefully like Mayweather does, he counters no matter what, and that's why he gets tagged in the process. His balls are too big for his own good :-(
I think an underrated, very intelligent boxer is Delvin Rodriguez. Not top of course, but I have yet to see him make a tactical mistake in the ring.
Mayweather, B-Hop, Ward, Donaire, James Toney, Vitali, Tarver, Narvaez, Calderon, Holyfield, Winky... Martinez is getting very good at adapting as well.
Lennox Lewis was very crafty and savvy. After the 1st Duran fight, Leonard was very smart in the ring. Martinez these days impresses with how he takes control late. Wlad is smart too, knowing exactly what to do to protect his glass jaw and dominate everyone. It may not be fun to watch, but its effective. Ward looks good too now.
Hopkins/Mayweather. It's hard to decide because of Hopkin's age, the way he has adapted his fight game and the way he mentally destroys fighters I think is more impressive.
