Packey McFarland used to stare hard. His manager started a rumor that Packey learned how to hypnotize people into losing. It worked like a charm on some fighters, like Battling Terry, against whom it was so effective that Terry, after realizing he'd been psyched, began to employ the same trick.

True Story

 

Issue with Tyson was the was always lots of dog inside of him. Watch Foremans staredown of Ali in 1974. Foreman was one fighter who truly wanted to kill his opponent. True killer instinct and he backed it up with a presence in the ring second to none.

 

Dempsey would usually stare down to the canvas before a match rather than offer a true staredown.

I once fought a higher tier journey with a good reputation for being stiff, fairly skilled, and durable as all get out.

When we got to the staredown, the referee giving instructions, this guy looked THROUGH me, eyes wide, nostrils flaring, and he's growling and snorting like a bull. It sounds like it'd be comical, but I came away thinking, "Damn, he's ready to fight." Put me off a bit. I knocked him out with one punch about 90 seconds later, which was a big letdown.

George Foreman was intimidating, even in old age, because he seemed so relaxed, at peace, and yet focused. You knew you were in for a hard night.
