In the rematch,Fitz broke his nose and opened deep cuts above and below both eyes. The consensus was that Jeffries won because he was so much bigger and so much younger.Hype Igoe who saw the fight said Fitz gave him a worse beating than Dempsey gave Willard .
Watch Jeffries against Ruhlin there is no head movement, no guard,he just pulls his chin down against his shoulder, his left hand is down by his waist. You don't get your nose broken 3 times, have scar tissue above both eyes, and a cauliflower ear,all from just 22 fights!
I am well aware of all this, but you have to contrast that with Fitzsimmons failure to land anything much on him in the first fight. It is fair enough to argue that Jeffries might have had serious gaps in his defense, but I don't think that you can argue that he was a fighter who didn't have a defense. He clearly gave quite a lot of thought to defense.
One of the greatest punchers in sport history landed some punches in one of two fights against Jeffries... is this really a criticism of his defense? I am not sure how good Jeffries was defensively, I would guess that he was below average for great fighters but still quite good. It's important to note that Jeffries was a pressure figher, these kind of guys always get more punishment than movers.
I didn't say he didn't have defence, my contention is it wasnt very good! Fitz hadn't fought for 2years was drunk the night before and seriously underestimated Jeffries. He took him seriously the second tjme around. Let's not try and re-invent Jeff, as is being continuously attempted with Marciano, even as we speak.
I am not reinventing him, very much the reverse. I am going back to what people said about him at the time.
It's a reflection of Fitz greatness. He landed on anybody with brutal effect. With your description of Jeffries, it would be insult to whole era that he went that high. I don't buy that personally, especially reading how contemporaries described him. He was great fighter who was limited defensively, but that doesn't make him bad or "face-first" slugger.
Most fighters don't fight against such a good competition this early and nobody after 1920s fought 20+ rounders.
Have watched it Mac and I must confess I never saw much evidence of head or upper body movement, though maybe it wasn’t as prevalent then. The way he stalked actually reminded me a bit of Marciano.
Here is the crux of the matter. If we assume that all of the contemporary descriptions of Jeffries were sincerely written, then we have to assume a truth that makes them all a possible interpretation of what was being seen. The truth must be consistent with both the positive and the negative descriptions. No doubt some observers knew what they were looking at better than others, and like with modern fight fans, the fighter would be as good as his most recent fight. This leaves us with a man whose defense proved very effective in some fights, but got breached quite comprehensively by some fighters.
It's important to note that Ruhlin seemed to be hurt from the beginning of the round, so Jeffries didn't care about Gus offense.
