go ahead and start a lot of arguments used to describe these guys were their athleticism and not their skills
Speaking about boxers who appear crude on film but are legendary ATGs, I think about Stanley Ketchel, Top 5 Middleweights of all time.
I also think it was a fix. Lately though I've been doubting it somewhat, since McGovern did also TKO Erne who was LW champion. McGovern was also very fresh and solidly prime for it, whereas Gans had a ridiculous amount of activity in just 2 months alone and was possibly weak. Not saying it is legit, but these are things to consider imo. I think it is possible the fight with Gans was fixed but McGovern himself didn't know it, so the film would be good for assessing his style.
If it was a fix, I've never seen anything to suggest McGovern had any involvement. If think there's a possiblity it was on the level, and the 133Ib weight limit just weakened Gans enough to make the poor showing. But one of the papers did report odd betting too. I think it most likely was a fix, but we will never know for sure, and I think there's a fair case against it being fixed.
I was. Still shaking my head in bewilderment it was taken seriously. Albeit by someone who should not be.
