A bit controversial maybe, but what about Pacquaio? I know I know, but If you’re after a true atg who could possibly be called a bit ‘crude’ I think he might be one. He never was exactly the best technical boxer, Marquez always had his number , I thought he beat him 3 times with one draw. Morales schooled him the first time, even to the point of playing with him at the end. I know Pac knocked him out twice, but he had no answer for Morales utilising his better boxing and size. I’m not Maywesther’s biggest fan , but I think he’d have beaten Pac whenever they fought. He also has a couple of early knockouts on his record to decent but hardly great opponents. I know Pac was brilliant, as a physical specimen he’s top ten all time, but he relied more on his ridiculous speed and power overwhelming his opponents than pure boxing ability. To put it another way, he’s probably the second greatest boxer of his generation, but if I were to teach someone to box there are quite a few boxers who he even fought himself I’d say to go watch first before suggesting Pac-man. edit- I thought the title also had ‘crude’ in it, I wouldn’t call Pac limited , but I think you can maybe say he was a little crude.
This is indeed controversial but also thought-provoking. I think you would be right if we talked about strictly pre-Roach Manny. But he gained a lot more sophistication as he worked with Roach, albeit he never became a technical virtuoso. I was thinking of more in the direction of crude slugger types who essentially barged forward and wiindmilled their arms (hence Foreman and Moon as my choices), but relying on speed primarily rather than power is also rather "limited"!
People call Foreman an ATG and he got wasted by punching himself out because he didn’t know how to fight properly… 2x against Young he was totally befuddled - then if you want to count Old Foreman… Stewart, Holyfield and Morrison all made him look 2nd rate, it was shocking for his age what he did but objectively look at it as it was… eh
