the worst british champion has to be between mcphilibin and williams at cruiserweight.

worst title challenger must surely be howard clarke v fernando vargas, this was during an era where likes of lueshing got a shot (dropped tito) but howard clarke jeez he even went on to lose his next 16 fights!

I wouldnt say Rees, Audley or Rhodes are in any way limited.

Rhodes v Moore was an amazing fight and solid win
Audley destroying Williams was a brilliant performance
Rees has solid domestic level wins but falls massively short at world level.

 

Purdy has to be up there, if you look up the word plodder in the dictionary you'll see a picture of Lee Purdy.

 

At world level? Gary Lockett.

So out of his depth against Pavlik it wasn't funny.

He admitted after the fight that he was there for the pay and it sure looked like it.

 

Gary Woolcombe was very lucky to win the British Light-Middleweight title, considering Facey stopped him in an English title fight not too long previous.
McPhilpin however is probably even more limited.

 

He was there for the pay day and even though he knew he was out of his depth at least he had a crack at it. And of course got flattened!

Just read that Alexander broke his his hand in the first round on Saturday. I thought Purdy's plod forward with ear muffs routine was bad enough anyway but that puts an even worse shade of shite on it!

 

What about Howard Clarke vs Fernando Vargas

 

Think McPhilbin is a decent call, cruiserweight is very very mediocre for quality and I think that is what opened things up for a fighter like him. In any other division you'd never get away with throwing and holding and throwing 10 punches a round. But against people like Leon Williams and the corpse of Enzo anything is possible.

At world level Lockett and Jennings spring to mind in recent years. Lockett had nothing at that level at middleweight, didn't have the power he had at a lower level and was lacking skills, heart, size...everything going into that fight v Pavlik. Jennings at least had handspeed and a bit of ability but I'd still say he was one dimensional because his one dimension was just his jab and footspeed to try and steal rounds, he wasn't very proactive.
