Even more amazing that people consider Duran near his prime. 10 years after his first world title 33 years of age.
It doesn't belong in this thread but with that said...what fight were those fellas watching? Leonard held sway with the judges and had it been an actual close fight Duran would have suffered the same fate as Hagler perhaps. It was no accident that fight was in Montreal. Sugar Ray's adopted hometown. All the love and admiration from the 1976 Gold Medal must have been worth a couple points on the scorecards. Nothing that happened around Leonard and Trainer was coincidental.
Duran got the biggest reception, and while he definitely won it wasn't a one sided fight. The fight In a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest that went the full 15 rounds, Durán was the aggressor often throughout the fight was able to earn a close unanimous decision victory. Durán would both land and throw more punches for a 35% success rate, while Leonard, who abandoned his usual slick boxing style and went toe-to-toe with Durán, landed 273 of 753 for a 36% rate. Whilst, Leonard would make adjustments late in the fight, Durán had built a large enough lead by that point in the fight. When the decision was announced, Durán was incorrectly announced as a winner by majority decision as one judge's scorecard was erroneously tabulated as a 147–147 draw, however the mistake was discover a Durán would win on all three scorecards with scores of 145–144, 148–147 and 146–144 Dave Anderson's take on the fight below. https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=ducFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6342,4269210&hl=en Anderson had it for Duran by 1 round. Unofficial AP scorecard: 144-141 Duran; unofficial New York Times scorecard: 144-142 Leonard. Judge Harry Gibbs had it for Duran by 1 round. https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AIBAJ&sjid=AUcEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6847,3706149&hl=en
Sweet then. I remember reading your posts from old threads years back. You have a resounding amount of Boxing knowledge, so it is good to see you posting again. Try searching for those bouts in Japanese if you haven't, as they usually come up in better quality.
The Tyson-Holy 2 wasn't one sided at all, it was very close and in the 3. round Tyson was better and basically Holyfield was very defensive. Unfortunately the bites saved Holy from a beating.
Holyfield won the first 2 rds on all cards. Judge: Jerry Roth 26-29 Judge: Duane Ford 26-29 Judge: Chuck Giampa 26-29
He won the first 2rds and was in front in the 3rd when the fight was stopped. What more did he need to do?
Duran got cheers from the people after spending time there. He was interacting with the people and he more or less won them over. Trainer and Leonard probably didnt anticipate that. That doesn't change their intentions. I did say it doesn't belong on the most one sided thread. It wasn't a close fight. If have closer than 3 points than 144-141. Is about as close as you can make it without suspicion of bias IMO. Leonard wasn't landing clean punches, whatever he did land had little to no effect. Ray was missing more punches from point blank range he woud have in 3 fights. A great defensive performance by Duran. 40 years later it still is.
