    Excellent shout Richard.

I have Zarate #4 at BW all time. I've seen some knowledgeable posters argue him outside of the top 10, despite his insanely dominant record in BW contests, due to a lack of quality opponents. I think that does a disservice to the esteem Zamora should have been held in going into that fight.

As you say 29-0 all by KO, including 4 world title wins and victories over Eusebio Pedroza and Soo Hwan Hong x 2, Carlos's win over Zamora was a very big deal in the context of the world BW scene at that time.

Yeah, Alfonso Zamora kayoed Eusebio Pedroza in round 2. Many still point to Carlos Zarate's massacre at the hands of Wilfredo Bazooka Gomez in Oct 1978.

I was, like you no doubt, thinking of this thread about halfway thru the fight.

Did anyone think spence could win? In the UK Crawford was 4/6 which means 1/3 people thought Spence would win. Are these people who've never watched boxing or just simpletons?

I definitely agree with this, a strong title reign, a good spell of dominance, and some solid quality opposition in there, despite the oft-criticism- Zamora the big one, but also Davila, Ferreri and Martinez for the title (and impressive pre-title performances vs Benicio Sosa the #1 contender- and Neston Jiminez, who was world title level and had challenged Martinez for the title himself). As we know, Zarate was only usurped following a very controversial decision vs Pintor.

To give a guide of how highly rated and dominant at his weight he was back then, Boxing Illustrated compiled a top 10 PFP list mid-1977 (not year end). Their plan was to do it monthly but that didn't materialise and didn't become a regular thing until around 1984 - when KO mag, started this on a regular basis and the Ring followed around 1990, when Stanley Weston (who launched BI himself) took over and many of the KO staff then wrote for Ring and carried this on. This was BI's list:

    1. Carlos Zarate
    2. Carlos Monzon
    3. Roberto Duran
    4. Alexis Arguello
    5. Miguel Canto
    6. John Conteh
    7. Wilfred Benitez
    8. Carlos Palomino
    9. Victor Galindez
    10. Esteban De Jesus.

So coming on top out of that list of very impressive fighters, was no mean feat.

I thought he could but was reserved due to the injuries he received in that car accident. Before that, he looked to be the goods.

That was because Don King needed Macho to be undefeated, as if one loss Macho couldnt sell the fight anyways.

After the fight they reinstated the Haugen loss. I guess this was the beginning of the time when undefeated records were super-appreciated by promoters?

I think most thought Crawford would win, but not so emphatically. I was in that category.
