Great post. It is true. This fight had what the great fights do. Guys trying to find the openings and working to get them and then when we thought Ray found the opening and win, Hearns changed and boxed him and started to pick him apart from the outside. The fact he could do that and had the skills to change were impressive. Then Ray had to flatfoot and find the opening again and he did when Hearns gave him the opening after swelling his eye.Even the rematch in 1989 had back and forth rounds. And that probing and finding weaknesses aspect is great. That is why I love Curry vs. McCallum so much.. Curry is forgotten now and probably should be hall of fame is other guys are in there, but it reminded me a little of Hearns vs. Leonard, just not 14 rounds. A much shorter 5 rounds, but fascinating no doubt. Both guys were probing and setting up and the difference was that Mike McCallum was probably just better than Curry and would have prevailed no matter what since Curry had the speed over Mike, but similar to Hearns and Leonard just Mike was better- in that Hearns and Leonard, were more evenly matched and closer in many aspects of skill and speed and timing and careers.. I think Curry had skills, but Mike was taking over in round 4, but he had to probe and land body punches to get Donald to become defensive. I love that fight, and I am not a great fan of Mike or Donald really, but that fight is one of my top 4 I would say.. Probing, thinking and countering and then countering the countering. I love it. That is boxing. I love greats fights like Hagler vs. Hearns or Arguello v. Pryor, but the probing stuff can be just as great. They are finding the punches in the little counters. Almost like countering a counter with a counter. . What ruined McCallum vs. Curry was HBO and trying to act like they were objective.
