Yeah that is pretty weak! They are just mad that their favorite boxer probably can't beat him! :blurp
1.De La Hoya was a good win, but most certainly not a great one, when you consider the age and ring-rust of the opponent, and the performance itself. Taking those things into consideration, it is not and should not be one of the stand-outs on the resume, unless you only care for big name recognition. 2.The thread is not asking for who is the most overrated fighter by The Ring, it is merely asking for the most overrated fighter. Currently, Floyd Mayweather fans make up a large percentage of boxing fans. Therefore, if a fighter is highly overrated by a considerable portion of the worldwide boxing fan community, I believe he is a perfectly legitimate answer to the question. 3.Even the most ardent Calzaghe fan knows he is nowhere near top 5 p4p ever. There are many PBF fans who believe he is right up there, they say so often on these very pages.
Forget name recognition. Floyd went up in weight for that fight against one of the top 20 fighters in boxing. You can't simply write this off, that's a really good win. I never said it was. I used Ring Magazine as an example of a credible, unbiased source. You just made this up. This is competely untrue. So now Floyd is the overrated fighter of all time based on made up stats. There are a handfull of posters on ESB who believe this. It makes no sense to someone is the most overrated fighte of all time based on made up stats, and the opinion of a handfull of Mayweather fanatics.
1.On what basis was he one of the top twenty fighters in the sport at the time they fought? TWO fights in THREE years, one a KO defeat, the other a win over Ricardo ****ing Mayorga. Bernard Hopkins is currently ranked 4th p4p by The Ring- at 43 and coming off the Calzaghe fight where it was blantantly obvious that despite all his talent, the guy just doesn't have the stamina to go 12 rounds anymore- is he really the 4th best fighter on the planet right now? No. So saying he 'is one of the top 4 boxers in the sport' doesn't necessarily mean anything. Maybe De La Hoya was the 19th or 20th best fighter then in your own opinion, maybe he wasn't, but the fact is the guy was old and he was rusty, and he was nowhere near what he once was. 2.Boxing would be nothing without the fans. Fans make boxing. They make up the boxing community. The opinion of many fans is as legitimate as that of one boxing publication, in a discussion of this nature. 3.It is my opinion that Floyd Mayweather Jr has many, many fans worldwide. Many of them post regularly on here. I didn't actually use any stats, because I don't have any about that, as I haven't done a worldwide survey of boxing fans. Neither have you. All we have is our opinions in matters like these. Mine is just as valid as yours, so I don't know why you seem determined to dismiss mine. Then again, I might know.
Are they only good because Floyd beat them ? Castillio is going to the hall of fame no doubt , Corrales is debatable because he died so young , but he was rank number 4 on the p4p list when floyd beat him and he was a huge favorite to beat floyd , castillo was ranked around 10 and recaptured the 135 title more then once , so these fight are more then just good opposition these guy were great , since they pretty much ruled the 130 and 135 weight classes. Hernadez was a 39-1 young vet,and floyd was 17-0 up and comer . again Hernadez was more then just adequate opposition at the time . not great but better then good. Mandfredy and Hatton were good wins Hatton the undisputed 140 pound champ and number 3 or 4 p4p ranked fighter .. mandfredy was a dame good fighter when floyd beat him so this could be considered a good win. adequate fighter do make the p4p list nor do the make to the hall of fame out of all the figher listed the least like to not make it is Manfredy.
Mike tyson...dude was fed hand picked bums for years and fought in a weak division much like the one we have today if not worse and people still act like he was some kinda god. Imo holyfield and lewis would still have destroyed a "prime" tyson just like douglas did.
A Ray Mercer quote: Ray Mercer: Tommy Morrison. Morrison hit me so hard to the body with those hooks that I was actually farting in the ring. (Laughs) You have to act like…you can’t let the guy see that you’re hurt, but I’m pretty sure he heard and smelled a couple of things. (Laughs) But he hit me harder than I was ever hit in boxing
I think one of the most overrated fighters in my life time was Princed Naseem Hamed. He got schooled bad by the first great fighter he ever faced. Had no real technique, he relied soley on punching power and reflexes. Another is Ali. I'd say he was the greatest self promoter but not the greatest fighter. BTW no way Marciano loses to Tyson H2H.
Marciano would be fighting as a cruiserweight. There's no way he'd even stand a chance against Tyson.
Go visit some boxing websites. Check out their rankings at about the time of that fight. Many of them had Oscar in the top 20 However, the opinion of biased fans is not. Again, you're not basing your opinion what objective fans are saying. You're going by biased, Floyd fanatics. The average Mayweather fan would not have him as a top 5 fighter. Not in this case. You said a good percentage of boxing fans are Mayweather fans. Common sense will tell you this isn't the case. Regardless, fans always have tendency to overrate their favorite fighters. Just out of curiosity, what would you consider a good percentage to be?
I bet there are more Floyd-haters who think he "isn't ****" than Floyd fanatics who think he walks on water. So if you're basing his "ratedness" on his fanatics alone and not his haters, you are probably missing most of the equation. :nono Therefore, overall, that would probably make him UNDERRATED as HELL! :thumbsup
It doesn't bother me. Many people on this site use half ass, ******ed logic anyway. Basic common sense would tell you that Mayweather isn't close to being the most overrated fighter ever.
