Who is the most overrated heavyweight of each decade? Pick a champion and a non-champion.

1980s: Mike Weaver and Gerry Cooney.
1990s: Mike Tyson and Razor Ruddock.
2000s: Samuel Peter and Derek Chisora.
2010s: David Haye and Dillian Whyte.
2020s: Tyson Fury and Filip Hrgovic.

The issue with this is that in the old days there was less belts and far less champions.

For example you have Patterson listed as the most overrated but in what regard ? No one rates Patterson as a top 10 Heavyweight of all time nor does anyone rave and rant about him. He's considered a very good Heavyweight possibly borderline low tier great but I wouldn't call him overrated.

For the 70s you have Frazier listed but he's an ATG how is he overrated ? That's the problem you have so little names to choose from.

I'm going to start with the 1980s as that's when you started to have more alphabet champions.

    1980s

For champions Greg Page = He was highly rated rated and considered to be the next Muhammad Ali he certainly didn't live up to the hype hence he would be considered overrated even though I like Page.

For contenders Gerry Cooney = Got alot of hype for being the next great white hope without having any real experience at world level.

    1990s

For champions Michael Moorer = Beat a severely under par Holyfield I never thought he was on that level and was quite fortunate to be in that position. Moorer was a good Heavyweight don't get me wrong but I thought he was quite clearly a step below the very best notable Heavyweights of that era.

For contenders David Tua = He does get alot of hype from casuals and even on this forum.

    2000s

For champions Nikolai Valuev = Got alot of hype because of his size but he wasn't that good honestly.

    For contenders Samuel Peter.

    2010s

    For champions David Haye.

For contenders Luis Ortiz = Got alot of hype for being the bogeyman of the division but his only real notable win was against Bryant Jennings.

Well, Patterson and Frazier are my picks because they are default picks. I can't pick Ali, Foreman or Liston.

Anyways I have removed all champs before the 80s.

I had to choose between Louis and him. I had two choices basically.

To avoid the whole fiasco, I will remove all champs pre-80s.

90s is George Foreman and Jorge Luis Gonzalez, hands down.

None of the other decades even come close.

That's what I'm saying that's the issue with this thread you have to go with default picks because there isn't any other names to choose from even if they aren't considered overrated.

It's a decent idea for a topic but unfortunately I don't think it works for the older eras in regards to champions.

Why does everybody need to be underrated, or overrated? Greatest or worst... ever. Why does everything boil down to pointless ****-ant bickering and semantics?

If that even is the case, the 2020's is coming pretty close. Do you remember when Joyce was rated #1 destroyer of all time? About six months ago?

Joyce’s accomplishments are better than 99s Foreman’s, let alone Gonzalez. He just burned out.

I do think Joyce was overrated but he did have some solid wins Dubois, Takam, Jennings, Parker.

The Parker and Dubois wins also look alot better with hindsight.

1980s: Tony Tucker, Gerry Cooney (hard to pick anyone else as there were a lot of paper champions that decade)
    1990s: George Foreman, ?
    2000s: Vitali Klitschko, Andrew Golota
    2010s: Deontay Wilder, Luis Ortiz
    2020s: Tyson Fury, Zhilei Zhang

    Peter was a title holder.

Right, Bruno was indeed a title holder, thanks. And Ortiz is an excellent pick.
