I was guilty of being blown away by it, and anointing Donaire as the new Pacquiao, but perhaps going in, hardcore fans was overating both.

Pretty much all of Sergio's cv. Froch's too is extremely overrated.

But I'm saying, Why for example, did a win over Margacheto, propel Mosley to top 3 pound for pound and made people think he's a threat to Mayweather, given his form without that fight.

I think Cotto's win over Sergio is overrated because Martinez was shot to an almost comical degree, and was lucky not to lose to Martin Murray

It was a few divisions down where they were fighting guys their size. Not all boxers can do what pac did and climb weight and still beat bigger opponents. But during their time at their weight, they were the top 2 dogs.

Agreed. But anyway, that's a win that's more overrated in hindsight then when it happened. Both where pound for pound on most respectable lists, so I didnt bat an eye lid at Donaire reaching 3 or 4, unlike Mosley for getting to 3 over the cheater, or Broner getting to no.1 lightweight for 1 win.

I don't know because maybe the fact that Montiel's scull got deformed that night had something to do with his rapid decline afterwards :).

Because of their accomplishments up to that point. Margarito was the longest reigning titleholder at 147 calling out Floyd and Zab and neither one would fight him. Everyone thought Mosley would get killed. Of course it appears differently in hindsight.

Calzaghe over Lacy was a masterful performance and does it matter that he wasn't really the next Mike Tyson as we thought. Some but not much for me because Calzaghe did best he could do under the circumstances.

In fact Margarito was the big bookies favorite but lots of experts picked Mosley based on the fact that he had a long history beating Mexicans azzez in the Cali gyms and being highly effective against that style. I was going to bet on Margo than I saw that the odds were terrible for a fight that was pretty close in my mind.

Very good thread, and equally good discussion.

Actually, yes. Bernard Hopkins should be commended for his longevity and ring IQ, but he has never beaten a great fighter that was as big as he was when he beat him. Outside of longevity, B-Hops resume is very, very thin. If B-Hop had fought in the mid to late 70s early 80s lightheavy division, he would have been an afterthought.

For the same reason that people think Amir Khan is a threat to Mayweather. And almost every fighter before that going back a long ways.

I agree that these were/are overrated.

I removed fights like Stiverne's wins over Arreola and Garcia's wins over Morales because I think those get properly criticized enough that the value isn't all that overrated.

Donaire vs. Montiel wasn't overrated. It was an epic early KO, for one. And going in both were on every P4P top 10 list. What else could you ask for? Montiel fell way off immediately after the loss but going into the Donaire showdown he had amassed a FOTY-quality year.
