The threads name explains itself. Here's a few of mine-
    Jerry Quarry
    Gerry Cooney
    Andrew Golota
    Mickey Ward
Earnie Shavers generally regarded as the hardest punching boxer has made him quite popular even though he never won a world title.
    Any others?

Love that avatar. Off the top of my head I would say Quarry. Also, George Chuvalo was pretty popular back in that era. And of course, back then there was only one world title. Wasn't a bunch of different belts up for grabs. Shavers was pretty popular too now that you mention it.:lupie:

Yaqui Lopez . Fought for LHW three times and CW title. His 1980 title fight with
Saad Muhummad was a fight for the ages and Fight of the Year.
Mustafo Hamsho. Fought a prime Hagler twice and was gate keeper of the MW
    in early 80's.
Joe Bugner only fighter to go distance twice with Frazier and Ali.
Bernie Briscoe a Philadelphia legend. Challenge for title 3 x.
Henry Cooper what a left hook.

    Armando Muniz
    Jesus Pimental
    Jose Medel

These three would pack them in.

Shavers was the first to come to my mind. Frank Fletcher had a good following at one point.

Michael Watson. Came sooo close against eubank. A sad ending to a fantastic fight. Also Tony Sibson, another favourite of mine. Loved him against Hagler and andries.

David Tua- Hard hitting, destroyed a number of top players during his prime. Came up against an ATG of Lewis, didn't fire (or should I say, wasn't allowed too).

Howard Davis Jr. - voted the best boxer at the 1976 Olympic games, he was to become the only gold medalist of that famed USA team never to win a pro title. He had several attempts and came so close against the feared Edwin Rosario where he suffered a last round knockdown that lost him a split decision. So many people were so disappointed for him that he never did manage to win a title in the end.

Art Aragon and Enrique Bolanos would often fight before SRO crowds. Also, although I don't know his audience numbers, I'll bet Bob Satterfield's kill or be killed fighting style would pack them in likewise.

Was he popular? I thought no one liked him or didn't like watching his fights because of his negative defensive style?

Herol was popular and loved by the people of Sheffield. The hands down combined with the speed and power, he was good to watch.
