Not in terms of well-liked, but in notoriety.

    Tyson?
    Leonard?
    Duran?
    etc.

I'll put up a poll later on

Ok, after reading the thread opener more closely, as in NOTERIETY...then of course it's Tyson..I guess that's the answer you wanted.

I remember in 1979, they were saying the most popular pros in the world after Ali were Duran, Leonard, and -- believe it or not -- Rossman. We're talking just that one point in time.

Yes. The Sugarman was touted as boxing's next superstar after Ali's retirement in 1979.

De La Hoya was a big draw in his day as well but hardly notorious with his looks and image.

Leonard. Tyson wasn't even on the radar screen due to his being 10 years younger than Leonard.

Tyson became the next big thing not long after Leonard departed the pro ranks the first time in 1984. Tyson turned pro after the 1984 Olympics, where he was an alternate, and became famous not long after, then a title holder in late 1986.

    At the end of 1978,

    1) Ray Leonard
    2) Mike Rossman
    3) Teofilio Stevenson

Note: There was talk of a possible Muhammad Ali vs. Mike Rossman fight in 1979.
