Most popular Polish heavyweight ever, Golota or Adamek?

The South Pole will, for whatever reason, always be the more popular of the two. Ive heard stories about how he was an ass at buffets, would bully people in the street, thought he was a deputy, etc. but somehow, he was always beloved by the polish community (after Golota, the interest in boxing went down HUGE here in The Niagara Region, to the point people still think Tyson is champ). It might be because the expectation was so high for the guy, and he was always one win away from greatness. Just look at the Golota Express on here and compare to any other individual boxer that has so become worthy ebnough of even having a thread devoted solely to him like the Express.

Because he was Poland's first big professional boxer. And I've never met the man myself but many of my friends have and they all spoke well of him, maybe he was a dick before, perhaps he's settled down.

i heard that from a guy that was helping him train before the lewis fight. i cant remember the guys name, but he was a former mr america. maybe because golota fired him about 2 months or something before the fight, but he told me stories about how golota would bud in line at buffets, and act like he owned the restaurant. wasnt golota wanted on charges of aggravated assault in poland as well?

dont get me wrong though, Golota was my favorite fighter right behind Ruddock. I still remember that night when he lost to lewis. what shock, and the ribbing i got from my friends! i also remember i was bouncing when he fought grant, and one of my coworkers was a former Canadian champ, Tom Glesby, and an amatuer champ, Mike something or other, and they both said golota would lose, so i was rubbing it in their faces the whole fight until...

Bar fight I think, but I don't really remember. And actually I know one person who spoke ill of him, someone who trained at the same gym and said he was a jerk (also said he was basically the best boxer he'd ever seen in person).

I lost money on the Grant fight. I was also rubbing in those knockdowns, and like you say, then.......

at least the two guys were boxers themselves, and nationally ranked, one being champ (he lost to lou savaresse later that year i believe because he was partying at the bar up until a week before the fight...took him really lightly) and they both knew grant was out-classed and golota beat himself.

This is true, but the question posted was regarding "most popular", no "better fighter".

Interesting you found the need to include that qualifier.

That said, I think most would agree with that.

Lots of people bet money on Golota in that fight. Even well known Polish Mob leaders.

Sure, Golota is the more popular fighter. He was basically a trail blazer not only for Poland but for Eastern Europe in general and perhaps even a breakthrough for white fighters who hadn't been in any kind of contention since Tommy Morrisson. But Adamek is still plying his craft and may still do something yet to beat Golota's popularity.........stay tuned and never say never.

Golota is real popular, I had a relative visiting canada for the first time, she was my step-fathers mother. she was around 60-70 years old and she was speaking to me about Golota. ever buddy knows Golota in the Polish community. Soon they will know Adamek when he becomes the first Polish fighter to win a HW title witch Golota failed to do.
