I would say it is the Winning FG-5000 found at this website http://winning-usa.com/index.html . Most pro's use winning headgear in sparring and some use the FG-5000 for more protection. The downside is that it is expensive as hell, around $400. This content is protected
The other downside for all face-saving headgear is that visibility becomes a real issue, especially if you're fighting a shorter guy. I used to use one in sparring, and a shorter opponent would literally disappear from view at times.
Which face saver has the best visibility? I think I tried on the everlast one time at a store and the peripheral visibility was actually better than the standard style due to the curved bar and eye shape.
I had one of those facesavers... Sure it saved my face, but didn't save any brain cells as you can't see ****. Especially as a novice when you're all over the shop they're not great. They're also heavy, head movement is made harder than it should be and you're always aware you're wearing it which imo was distracting.
It's tough - I have an office job so black eyes and broken noses are slightly frowned upon. At the same time,I can't stand the face savers - they make you blind in the ring.
for certified competition headgear, Fight Gear is the best. They only make headgear. I have had two of these. Loved them both. The only problem is the inside gets slick when you sweat. They can slide around on your head. http://www.ringside.com/FightGear-Competition-Headgear-with-Cheeks/productinfo/SG/ The Top Ten leather headguard is magic. Bayflex is amazing. Very absorbative. I don't feel a thing. No cheeks is sucky though. Also, they are funnily fit. I got a large, and the chin strap pops over my chin. Still, an amazing headgear. http://www.totiro-usa.com/Top-Ten-Boxing-Head-Guard-AIBA-Leather-p/tt-4069-4.htm I tried a Winning FG-2900. Very protective, but I couldn't see a damned thing in the narrow eye slit. I got punched MORE because I couldn't see. I am very tempted to try their cheekless headgear, since I would be able to see. http://winning-usa.com/headgear.html A note about the Winning headgear: The side of the head, above the ear, is nearly unprotected. The little circle of padding around the ear doesn't to much. There is significant padding up front. But on the side, almost nothing. That scares me, since I got knocked down (this summer) with a right hook to the side of my head, directly above the ear. I got knocked down wearing one of these by everlast, fyi: http://www.everlast.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EVUCH
when i used to spar id go into the gym and look for the head gear that looked like is gave the most protection, after a suggestion from one of the guys i tried one that was very small and light with no face protection. I got hit a hell of alot less.
Once you get good head movement, your headgear won't be as important as when it comes to cuts. You'll learn to protect your face and possibly take your shots to the side
I have found the Top Ten full protection headgear to be ideal. The headgear fits like a second skin on my head and the chin protector feels comfortable and does neither impair sight nor breathing. https://www.fighters-inc.com/head-guard-full-protection-325.html The guys at Fighters helped me to find the right size for me. They are very cool.
