We all have an unusual boxing scene we witnessed .
For me it was at stillmans gym when a featherweight contender Freddie Russo, while sparring "swallowed" his mouthpiece, fell to the floor grasping
his throat.the color seemed to go out of his face..A few famous trainers and handlers jumped in the ring and frantically dislodged the mouthpiece
from his throat. Saved Russo's life..I and others were so damned relieved..
    And yours----?

I was at a PAL gym in my middle school years and some pro came in, can't remember his name, to do light sparring with my trainer. He kept going too hard, and my trainer whacked him and broke his nose in a way I've never seen a nose broken. Blood splattered on the wall and he was rushed to the ER.

Think like everyone there -- though nobody said it aloud -- that Paret was dead in the ring -- beaten to death before our eyes, albeit on life support for a few weeks.

Jg .it must have been a terrible experience for you.
As I posted before about a week before that fight we met Emile Griffith
at the Concord Hotel where he was training for the fight. He told a group of us, that Paret called him a fairy in Spanish ' and I still remember those prophetic words to us," i will KEEL him...He was ANGRY !

Burt, it should be said that Foreman Hook was probably born in '97, so I highly doubt he was there.

You do realize Tyson's prime was in 88-90 right? Not 1997.

    I agree with this.

I was at the Vince Pettway-Simon Brown fight and had a pretty good seat, in the lower section of the old Capital Centre. People were scared for Simon Brown as he lay on the canvas, still moving his arms as if trying to punch, after being iced by one Pettway left hook. His wife was hysterically crying, who could blame her. I was pretty sure he'd be okay though because fighters who suffer brain injury in a fight usually taken an extended beating i.e. Paret, Levander Johnson, etc. One punch ko victims usually are okay once they wake up.

    Hi Burt,

I was forwarded your quote on the Most Scary boxing scene you have seen in person and yours was of Freddie Russo while training in Stillman's gym. WOW! well Freddie Russo is my father (may he rest in peace) and what a funny and weird comment to catch and I feel very fortunate as I would not be here now if not for the handlers helping get that mouthpiece out of my dad's mouth. What year did this take place? you must have been very young at the time. It does sound like Freddie, he was such a gifted boxer that he often played with his opponents like a cat and mouse. Particularly with his stable mate Rocky...my Mother would get so mad at him during sparring and would tell him to knock it off before Rocky gets mad and knocks your block off. But, Freddie liked to play and was a master boxer/puncher. Wish I could find more on the old man. During the filming of The Raging Bull one of my Dad's best friends (Jake LaMotta) stopped Scorcese and DeNiro in the ring to tell them about Freddie, telling them that he thought Freddie was one of the best of that era and if he had ever gotten a shot at a title he would have made good like Rocky and Jake did. The Three Amigos with Billy Graham (another Uncrowned Champ), Willie Pep and Joey Giardello, Chico Vejar and a few others made their way around the City in grand fashion over the years. It was another time in the fight game. Great fighters who were not rewarded for the entertainment they provided at the time and great stories surround them. Thanks for sharing one of yours. Al my best, Jim Russo
