No it wasn’t, it was a legitimate stoppage. The cut on Napoles’ left eyelid was so bad that the referee even said that he could see the eye ball from that cut. Do watch the fight, it is definitely a great fight, the 3rd round being an exciting one.

Yes, George corrected me on that you were referring to Bruce Curry, not Donald Curry.

I’ve seen the fight I just don’t remember it, weirdly I remember the ref interference being too much. I don’t know why. My mad with Backus but the rematch with both he and Morgan reflect an honest version of them fighting. Napoles being stopped by Backus isn’t indicative of his failings as a boxer and that is why context is important, it’s not like up until the stoppage he was being taken to the sword his thin skin let him down.

Me too. Backus was in that fight all the way. Wasn't like Napoles was dominating until his unlucky brows took it away.

    It was actually highly competitive.

    Bump
McCallum has now joined Sanchez and Napoles to boxing heaven. A trio of classy fighters these men were. RIP

Napoles may (or may not) be the most accomplished of the here and arguably (but not a lock for) better of the three P4P, but based on sheer skill I’d go:

    1. McCallum

    2. Sanchez

    3. Napoles

And no that’s not recency bias with McCallum passing. I mostly find him boring to watch, but he’s boring because his skills are next-level and he could out-everything someone while on cruise control (and often did).

    1: Napoles
    2: McCallum
    3: Sanchez

Napoles the most accomplished, the most fluid moving plus imo he chases down boxers a bit better than the rest.

McCallum had the better record in the "outboxers that I beat" department, beating Sumbu Kalambay, but he was still pretty prone to outboxing, though his body routes always kept him in the game.

We never saw Sal's true skill ceiling, that's why I put him under, achieved enough for a great but still kind of a what if.

I think technically Mike was the best of the three in that he really did throw some incredible combinations and could effortlessly switch from head to body.
Napoles is difficult because I think he was actually slightly past his prime when he became champion.
    Everybody knows about Sanchez.

All were an incredible high level. But McCallum as a guy that wasn't that quick was a complete technician. Defensively the most sound of the 3 and his decision making was the best. Sanchez was probably the best athlete and quickest. No shade to Napoles who had amazing rythm, punch choice and footwork.
