At there absolute best who is the most gifted and skilled fighter you've ever seen?

There's a similar thread in general but I think Classics pov will be smarter

    For me it's Ezzard Charles
Call me biased all you want he was an absolute beast at 175.

Robinson is the most impressive fighter I've seen on film. He had virtually no flaws, was a master of all styles and is an ATG Middleweight puncher despite weighing 145ish for the beginning of his MW career

Yeah, I agree that it's either Charles or SRR. There are some fighters that can be argued as better ones, but not more complete or skilled.

There's too many to count in all honesty and it's really subjective as far as 'skill' goes.

    Jose Napoles
    Ezzard Charles
    Harold Johnson
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Eder Jofre
    Roberto Duran
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Pernell Whitaker
    Orlando Canizales
Ricardo Lopez (which I KNOW people will disagree with me on)
    Mike McCallum

    Just to name a few.

Robinson was the 'best' because he was the complete package. Height, power, chin, alongside speed and refined technique. In a purely technical sense, he isn't the top for me, particularly defensively (he wasn't bad of course).

The boxers that immediately come to mind for me are Duran and Napoles. Great offensive technique, and defense utilised aggressively is one the highest forms of boxing skill IMO. I would also add Harada and Jofre in terms of skill, and Chang in terms of dynamism.

Then you have the more obvious standouts like Moore, Charles, Griffo etc. to choose from skill wise. There's alot of names to think of, such as Canto, who was one of the most skilled ever, but suited for one weight division only (where he was a midget).

Robinson, Charles and Pep seem like the stand outs to me.

People will disagree with me but I regard the film of Marciano, Armstrong and Dempsey very highly

I'm not saying any of them are the GOAT but they certainly all have top 10 potential. Armstrong and Marciano just couldn't be backed up no matter what you did, it was like trying to stop an avalanche. A scary part about Marciano, at his best, could end it with one shot as well. A hundred punches a round with one shot power is a scary combo.

Dempsey, in his prime, was blazing fast and hit precisely with vicious power, aggression and surprisingly great defense. A faster Tyson with more stamina IMO

Robinson and Jofre are about as good as it gets on film IMO if we are talking total package. Napoles too. Ray Leonard, Pernell Whitaker. Such artists.

For their era (and even any era really) you’ve got to be impressed by Benny Leonard, Joe Gans and Jimmy Wilde. Wilde was so impressive in his poise, judging of distance and timing and ring generalship. That’s without talking about his power and the fact he was fighting dudes 10-20% higher than his body weight.

Everything taken into account: physical package, skill set, ring IQ, fighting instinct etc, Duran is the best fighter I've ever seen. That marriage of furious raw aggressive physical ability and elite multi -layered textbook ability has never existed in any other fighter I've seen an acceptable amount of footage of. Robinson, Napoles, Whitaker, Marcel, Pep etc come close.

For a brief time I reckon Samart Payakaroon looked about as crazy brilliant as is possible to be in a boxing ring. A shame he turned pro so late really and burned out like he did, he was a unique force of nature and might well have been the best h2h bantam ever for a brief time.

I want to mention Eddie Gregory too, the fat idle pig. A born fighter if ever there was one.

I've seen better boxers than either.Ray was pretty complete, he could punch like few can ,move, box ,take a shot ,and had every punch in the book, but he wasn't the boxer guys like Pep ,Gibbons were.
Charles was a great fighter his resume proves it. How much of him is available to view when he was prime?

Ray Leonard is probably the best fighter I’ve seen live during my lifetime.
