One name I can think of the time of my head is Benny Leonard but I'm still thinking of possible other names of boxers of high Ring IQ that manipulate situations to their liking. Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, Archie Moore, Sam Langford, Tony Canzoneri, Joe Louis, Bernard Hopkins, and more
While it is true that a good corner is a great help to a fighter who is in a tough battle, a great fighter can adapt on his own to his opponents style, weaknesses and strength. Muhammad Ali, Archie Moore, Alexis Arguello, Carlos Monzon, and Salvador Sanchez were the few smart fighters who could accomplish this, their ring IQ's were phenomenal. These guy were not co dependent on their corners, they took the initiative on their own, the mark of a great fighter.
The first fighters I thought of who were thinking fighters was Gene Tunney, Jimmy Bivins, Archie Moore, Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Young.
Floyd Mayweather Vasyl Lomachenko Terrence Crawford Going back, SRR, Pernell Whitaker, Muhammad Ali, SRL, Jose Napoles, Carlos Monzon come to mind.
You could pick lots of great fighters here - the really good feinters, shifters, trap setters, rhythm breakers and multi-range skilled fighters. A non-exhaustive list for various reasons in their ability to impose their own skillset over opponents/take away their opponent's best attributes: Ali SRR B. Leonard Gans Fitzsimmons Langford Jack Johnson RJJ B Hop Moore Wilde Tunney Benton Locche Benitez Duran Hagler Jofre Sal Sanchez Arguello JJ Walcott SRL Loma Napoles Rigo Charles Pep Saddler PBF
Henry Maske, Johnny Nelson, Michael Spinks, Vitaly Klitschko, Joel Casamayor, Lou Ambers, Erislandy Lara, Ismael Laguna.
Evander Holyfield could beat guys with his head. He also made Tyson bite and made a man fly to the ring from the sky vs. Riddick Bowe.
