Do you think a fighter should be on the front cover for technical boxing when his inside-fighting is so comparatively weak? That is, you don't think the definitive technical boxer should be technically complete?
The greatest Nicaraguan fighter in history, and top 15-25 fighter in the history of the sport...... The Legendary Alexis Arguello!!! That straight right hand he landed on Kevin Rooney should be a "How too" video, and studied by anyone who has any interest of getting into a boxing ring.
It would indeed be an injustice typical of boxing if the best textbook boxer ever got beaten by a speed demon oddball who couldn't even properly deal with hooks.
I like this pick much better, but that little over-reach with the jab hurts me a bit sometimes. Still, you got that short reach, what are you gonna do?
It surely hurts the cause of a technical boxer/counter puncher to have T-Rex arms...I agree...but still, it's just that throughout the 50+ years of my following boxing, you could practically open your dictionary, look up "technical boxer", and find Harold Johnson's name and picture next to it.
Plus, short reach is a technical problem and you overcome it with accuracy, control and judgment of the distance, creating angles to improve your opportunity to strike and defence...not all of which is technical but all of which beautifies the technical boxer. Which does help.
Yeah, good pick, I mean he was a box-puncher as far as I'm concerned but I get where you are coming from. All distances, very smooth on that terrifying jab and actual arbitrary head movement, in a heavyweight.
Tyson is no slugger. Sluggers are standup punchers who relied heavily on physical strength, punching power and chin made of granite. - George Foreman - Rocky Lockridge - Matthew Saad Muhammad - Ray Mercer - George Chuvalo - Sandy Saddler - Srisaket Sor Rungvisai - Gerry Cooney
Ah yes, I have a faint recollection of that guy - “I Am The Bestest and don’t you Forgetest”. Worst type of big mouth - the one that can back himself up and then some…. Clearly he didn’t read the text book properly and rewrote some of it - revisions and addendums qualified with the due WARNING - if you do not possess the natural ability in abundance as I do then please do not try this at home - PS - there is ONLY one and I am the ONE. We’ll cut Zora some slack for age but I won’t say that he necessarily looked bad but we might assume had to be better when younger - Some noteworthy, sporadic moments - There’s Ali, purdy dancing’ ‘n’ all, Folley shrugs, thinks “oh, that’s nice” and then let’s go with a jarring textbook left and/or right, landing same and spoiling the aesthetics - if only temporarily. Gotta admit, never seen a guy drop quite like Folley did v Ali, only to suddenly awake, ready to go….. Don’t know if you’ve seen Folley v Bonavena. Very nice. At one point, Folley lands a perfect right hand on or near the bell - Ringo’s knees buckle as if about to go down- Folley, a true Mr Nice guy, grabs and holds Oscar to prevent him from falling - not Jack Johnson style - “Wait, I haven’t finished beating the bejesus out of you yet” but instead, humanely so. Oscar makes it back to his corner, shaking the webs out of his head. Not to say Folley didn’t proceed with the job of beating on Oscar in the ensuing rds, but it was simply professional obligation without undue malice or at least as little as a pro fighter can manage.
