Which fighter was the most textbook? IMO it's Tyson. He fought at midrange, kept his hands at cheekbone level at all times, and he always brought his hands straight back and had great bobbing and weaving head movement. Perfect technique too.
Watch the opening moments of the Tyson-Frazier fight for an example of pitiful textbook punching and punching technique. During his "peak" too. I think. Christ, is someone going to tell me it wasn't now? That seems to happen every time I criticise him...anyway, I vote for Lopez, who I am well into at the moment. I also think Tyson's head movement is overated. Designed to ditch a specific shot - the jab - it is not as arbitrary as I would like. See Dempsey for superior head movement.
Lopez might be the best choice. In any case, it's going to be a lighter fighter; gravity isn't so hard on them.
Thank you! I Thought I was the only one on the board who thought that about Tyson! WHat are your thoughts on Dempsy VS Tyson?
I pick Dempsey to score first on the movement...but Tyson to pull through on chin and get Dempsey early. Imagine being ringside for this one? What do you think?
Yep. Lopez was about as precise, and compact a puncher as you're likely to find. Plus his ability to guage distance, and defend against an opponent's attack was superb.
ezzard charles and joe louis. louis seemed lightyears ahead of anyone in terms of skill like he was from the future
I always appreciated Arguello in this regard. He's a good training tool. Hopkins deserves a mention here as well.
A modern fighter right out of left field.. text book straight punches and movement - Mikkel Kessler. Not the most textbook of all time.. but still, just thought i might through him in.
danny lopez had a very text style of guard, jab and cross. joel casamayor is also very text book with his guard and punches. but yea, ricardo lopez was a great choice, he was so disciplined that he had his hands up guarding his face before the bell rang to begin the next round.
