    hmmmmmmm

Ok cheers Doug. That's hard. Could I have Cooney overated and Chuvalo underated? Or is Chuvalo too early? Mike Spinks maybe?

Spinks would do very well in today's division. There isn't the talent around that could figure out his complex style.

Who was it that ranked Tunney in their top ten heavies? Sugar? The only compunction to do so is to defend Dempsey as being a top 5 guy.

Ted Sares had/has him #6. Mike Casey has him at #5. Robert Ecksel #7. Norman Marcus #4. Cheekay Brandon #6. Adam Berlin #9.

So that's like a certain type of writer/historian, sort of old school. Do not be misled - these guys believe Tunney to be one of the very greatest heavyweights ever to draw breath, a true phenomenon.

But ESB partly agrees. Tunney came #14 in Rummies HW poll. OK, that's not top ten, but to get into the top twenty you have to have a number, a reasonable number, of people voting him into their top tens.

He's alive and well as a great HW.

I'm a huge Tunney fan but I realize he moreso played a game of Capture the Flag with the belt than was a legitimate proven force in the division. His legacy is that of a great light heavy who was a mere placeholder/transition champ at heavy.

All the above lofty rankings just reek of Dempsey apologism.

I would not say Tunney was any sort of place holder. He was a pretty special fighter. He simply got in and out of the division very quickly. Did he even have ten heavyweights ? I think he gets an incomplete at heavyweight. That's putting aside the fact he never fought one black fighter in his entire career

He tried to get both Kid Norfolk and Harry Wills in the ring but neither wanted it. Wills for obvious reasons that he was already the best challenger in the division for years and had nothing to prove. Norfolk, I forget the reasons at this point of my evening.

That be said, Tunney was a great, an all time great, fighter but not an All Time Great Heavyweight. Sorry, his resume at that weight class just does not support such a claim.

I put some more thought into this and two guys who I think fit into the underrated slot would be Corrie Sanders and Michael Moorer. Corrie Sanders you never here much about and yes he did have a couple bad losses but he had a few very good wins and I think was one of the harder punchers to ever compete in the heavyweight division, his lack of dedication was his biggest downfall I feel he was the sorta guy who had a chance in any fight he was in. Michael Moorer a lot of people don't give much credit to because of his knockout losses to Foreman and Tua but I feel he was an excellent fighter. Pound for Pound he might have been one of the better fighters of the 90's he was a brilliant light heavyweight and he was a very good heavyweight. He beat a number of good fighters as a heavyweight and one great fighter in Evander Holyfield. Even his loss to Foreman I feel was a brilliant performance through 9 rounds no one was able to dominate old Foreman the way he did for those rounds. Even later in his career when he wasn't in the best of shape he was still capable of beating top fighters. I feel Michael Moorer at his best was a very good challenge for any heavyweight.

Sanders had better potential than his overall record reflects, but Wlad aside, he didn't beat anyone in their prime. It can be argued that Bobby Czyz is the second biggest win of his career, or maybe faded Bert Cooper.

Agreed that his potential was pretty good though. Actually, I think a Sanders-Moorer fight would have been very interesting!

Simply not true regarding Norfolk ... the Wills issue is sketchy as well .. either way at the time Wills was ancient.

You are seriously stupid, dude. Maybe the dumbest, most frequent poster on these boards, and that's really saying a lot. Are you allowed to drive? I ask for all our sakes that you don't vote in any election.

Although he may have responded in a derogatory manner or one that you may have perceived as disrespectful he posts decent stuff most of the time...I think it was a response to your diminishing of Frazier as the 3rd best of his era, and then did the same to Holy....both points were IMHO way off, so I chose to ignore them....then further on you basically equated them with Peter....We are all allowed to have our own opinions, but with the Frazier bashing on here lately it probably made him/me/others think you were part of the elroy/foxy trolling campaign.
