McAvoy never proved himself the best middleweight in Europe. McAvoy was 168lbs when he beat Babe Risko,162lbs, and 168lbs when he beat McCoy who was just two pounds heavier at170lbs. A natural super middle Jock would have done better in todays era where he would have fitted in well with the likes of Calzaghe ,Froch,Kessler ,and Groves Gilroy? I'll just say no ,not for me he is rated about right by the vast majority.Which included Peter Wilson and Reg Gutteridge.
Today? Possibly Jack Johnson, especially by those who rely almost exclusively on videos of poor quality, not to mention those who don't understand what they're seeing when watching Johnson's style. It's interesting that the 3 boxing people I've known, who actually saw Jack Johnson and Joe Louis, in person, all thought (with confidence) that Johnson would have beaten him. 2 of them were not so sure about Johnson beating Dempsey. Interesting.
Mike Tyson. He gets both overrated and underrated, and when he gets underrated it's usually to the extreme.
Kalambay is criminally underrated. He should be in the hall of fame without question. Going back even further, Joey Archer is another guy that was a master boxer that is simply not respected due to his emphasis on boxing or slugging. Ottke and Corey Spinks are two more that lacked power but were highly skilled and underrated. Again, I'm talking about pure boxers which typically get underrated by people that only watch boxing for the sluggers/swarmers and call pure boxers runners or cowards.
Felix Trinidad was overrated for a spell but not by as much as his detractors thought. Now I think he gets underrated especially when considering what he brought to the table as a Welterweight. His power was legendary at 147. He had speed, size and was technically sound.
Respectfully Disagree, if anything Johnson gets severely overrated, I myself think he’s not beating too many champions or top contenders that succeed him, great for his time and era but other than maybe Braddock , Carnera and possibly sharkey I can’t see him beating too many others
I really don't think Jack Johnson could have beaten Joe Louis, either, or Jack Dempsey, but the opinions of guys, who actually saw him fight, are worth some consideration, IMHO.
Some under rate him because of his losses to Muhammad Ali, which is odd, because Ali is usually considered the greatest of all time and, on top of that, Liston's style was made to order for Ali.
As a heavyweight fighter maybe Elmer Ray. There are no footages about his fights. He was one of the strongest top contenders in the 40s and had an astonishing run between end of 1943 till 1948. He arguably faded due to his age because he was even three years older than Louis and Walcott. He was a tall heavyweight and an excellent puncher and had a split series with Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles who became much more famous later on.
