McAvoy was a very good fighter but not really a great.imo.McCoy was no10 at light heavy hardly "feared." When Jock stepped up in class he usually came second.
EG
O-2 v Mills
0-1v Lewis
0-1 vThil
1-3 v Harvey.
Gilroy was neither, his record is very average and every time he stepped up in class he was beaten .The idea that there was some conspiracy to keep him away from domestic titles is just hogwash that does not stand up when his results are considered. You have been seriously overating your Grandfathers achievements for years and not only on this forum.
Of his 88 wins19 of Gilroy's victims had losing records.Nine of his opponents were debutees.
Six of his 9 draws were with men sporting the following records;
4-4-0
6-2-1
17-14-3
1-0-3
18-30-5
30-12-2
We can excuse his losses to men out of his weight class .but not the following;
8-0-0
7-2-0 ko'd
14-4-1
2-5-1
20-14-4
5-0-0
13-12-3
7-4-0
6-5-0 ko'd
7-3-3 ko'd
4-1-0 ko'd
13-9-3
2-2-2

That is not the record of a great fighter.
Here is a response from Miles Templeton, one of. if not the Uk's foremost boxing historian, to your stating he was world class and one of the best never to have won a world title.
"Jim

You have been saying for many years that Bert Gilroy was world class, that he was the most cheated athlete in British sporting history and now you are adding his name to the list of the greatest boxers never to win a world title.

I disagree.

He was a very good domestic fighter, nothing more.

Thus far, your claims for Bert have gone unchecked. I have nothing against Bert, or you for that matter, but you really cannot keep rewriting history in this way. He was a damned good fighter, and he didn't get the breaks, like many others. But in no way was he as good as you keep saying he was"

Sorry pal

Miles Templeton .

Some time ago a survey was done to rate the dozen best Scottish boxers of all time.Gilroy did not make that list! Loyalty is fine, but deluded hero worship gets you no marks.
Top 12 All-Time Best Scottish Boxers -- Alba's Greatest Ring Warriors (thefightcity.com)
Gilroy never attained a world ranking and the best he achieved vis a vis titles was Scottish Area Middleweight champ in1938 , a pts win over Tommy Smith 11-5-1 ,and Scottish Area Middleweight championship fight in 1939 a dsq win over Johnny Clement.34-23-1.
A win for the Vacant ScottishArea Light heavy title over Jock McCusker 43-33-4.

You have claimed that Gilroy had ,"nothing to eat and drink for 48hrs," prior to his fight with Marcel Cerdan ,would you like to provide some evidence of this please?

Cerdan spotted Gilroy over 11 pounds and thrashed him, flooring him 8 times in the 4 rds the slaughter lasted

Marcel Cerdan 162 lbs beat Bert Gilroy 173 lbs by KO at 2:18 in round 4 of 10
• Date: 1947-02-11
• Location: Seymour Hall, Marylebone, London, United Kingdom
"Marcel Cerdan, 161 1/4, of Morocco, the French and European middleweight champion knocked out Bert Gilroy, 173, of Scotland Tuesday night in the 4th round of their scheduled 10 round bout after flooring him seven times. Cerdan sent Gilroy down for the full count at 2:18 of the 4th round in the non-title bout before 1500 fans at Seymour Hall. Gilroy, who outweighed Cerdan by 11 3/4 pounds, was unable to take advantage of the extra poundage. Cerdan sent Gilroy to the canvas four times in the 1st round, once in the 2nd, once in the 3rd and once in the 4th." -United Press
