Inspired by Fergy's 'Overrated British Fighter' thread. Who does everyone consider to be the Brit boxer who has never got the credit and plaudits he deserves. Ken Buchanan is the first one who comes to my mind. He gets his just dues with us classic purists but is largely forgotten by the casual boxing fan.
Think their all underrated, mcvey. It's probably the passage of time that does that too, which is understandable but sad.
I saw him fight on the undercard of a Wembley Arena, show a 6 rounder against Lance Williams ,he floored the youngster but Williams was too strong for him and took the dec by half a point the ref was Larry O Connell of Holyfield v Lewis 1 fame. Ken was well past his best, but still showed glimpses of the great fighter he had been.I think I read he got £2000 for that fight? Ken's great nights were usually abroad or in sporting clubs ,so the British public didn't really get a chance to warm to him.He was a genuinely great fighter, top 15 all time at the weight, imo. To put in perspective the intention to make Eubank Jnr and Smith P4V. On the Wembley bill that night was Tony Sibson for the Euro title Cornelius Boza Edwards Buchanan Colin Jones Lloyd Honeyghan Mark Kaylor Nick Wilshire Times have changed!
