Maybe it's a fight of the year that get's forgotten about, or a fight that never won fight of the year. Ward vs. Burton? Gatti vs. Ivan Robinson?
Paulie Ayala vs. Johnny Tapia 1 get's my vote. I rewatched it for the first time in years back when the lockdowns started. I was blown away by what a great fight it was. Top 4 or 5 fights of the 1990s imho. It was a beautiful blend of styles. Ayala would chop away with his left upercut on the inside while Tapia would retaliate with vicious flurries to the body. Tapia would retreat on angles to set up counter punches, Ayala would then corner him on the ropes. On top of this both guys' personalities shone through: Tapia fought with his brilliant, free flowing, wreckless creativity, while Ayala was stoic, earnest, indefatigable. Just amazing.
Gatti-Robinson 1 and Bowe-Golota II are certainly not underrated. They get plenty of recognition. I nominate Quartey vs Espana. Very underrated war.
