23yo Mexican Miguel Vazquez puts his fresh IBF LW belt on the line on the 27th vs. former world title challenger Ricardo Dominguez in Tijuana, Mexico. Also appearing on the card is linal light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura, who's coming from the famous knockout victory over future HOFer Ivan Calderon, he'll face former minimumweight champion Manuel Vargas. Vazquez is one of the most unlikely champions you'll find in boxing today. At just 23 he's already preparing for his 30th fight and has quite a career behind him. He made his debut at 19 vs. 15yo(!) Saul Alvarez, which he lost by split decision, faced now #1 LWW Tim Bradley at 20 (LUD), and lost again to Alvarez at 147 at 21, then in an unexpected move moved down to 135 to throughoutly dominate Amir Khan conqueror Breidis Prescott, taking is '0' in a huge upset. This earned him the right to fight Ji Hoon Kim for the vacant IBF LW belt, which he won putting on a boxing clinic and even hurting Kim at times to a near-shutout for another upset. Vazquez, a tall right with a nickname of Titere, shows nice handspeed, high ring IQ, an unusual boxers' style among Mexicans, good stamina and decent power, and is the the dark horse of the pretty good lightweight division, seeking for recognition. The kid came through against odds and politics, and sometimes the most unexpected fighter becomes the next major player, and I look forward to see what Miguel Vazquez has in store for us.
