Who are the most underrated old school boxers that you don't think people don't mention enough and get overlooked? I have a handful I feel like I've heard nothing about in ages. Ali mentioned a few 20-30 years ago. Tempting to put Joe Louis, but (like Robinson) I think he's got some pretty decent love, especially from boxing legends. Ezzard Charles Jack Johnson Henry Armstrong Sam Langford Archie Moore Winky Wright Willie Pep Gene Tunney
Harold Weston jr Hedgemon Lewis Angel Espada Kid Pambele Adolf Pruitt Cowboy Dale Brown Teddy Yarosz Harold the shadow Knight
I think Ezzard Charles in particular is well respected on here and the consensus is pretty much that he’s the best light heavy ever. I think all the others on there get their due props apart from Wright.
It's a good point, I've only been on here a short while, but I suppose the people I listed are more underapprecaited from a casual person's perspective not From people on this site.
Eddie Perkins Antonio Cervantes Santos Laciar Baby Arizmendi Mark Johnson Antonio Esparragoza In here I feel most of the top guys from the early 2000s are underrated, someone like Shane Mosley or Bernard Hopkins should be talked more in high regard.
Tommy Burns Everyone else is allowed to be great during their era, even dudes who did not fight black men, but Tommy's not great despite his what 9 title defenses because of his era. It's weird to me. Jeffries, super great with Johnson in the wings. Tommy, not so great because Johnson's in the wings. ... JJ licked em both easy. Just saying the juxta is unfair.
Love the mention of Accavallo, Ioakeim. An unheralded Flyweight must be in with a shout as most underrated and/or underappreciated boxer of all time.
Burns is a criminally underrated fighter IMO. So is Willie Ritchie, a great standup boxer/technician who could mix it up on the inside as well. Here he is masterfully picking apart a very good contender in Joe Rivers (the fighter who was famously robbed in the "Double KO" fight vs. Wolgast). This content is protected
Any great fighter who fought when there was the color line has an asterisk next to his name. This applies to black fighters too. I mean, maybe Dempsey would have flattened Wills in 2 rounds. I get that it was a different time, and I really hate putting the asterisk on the black fighters who would have been more than happy to fight any white challengers, but it's still got to be there.
Hi Buddy. Excellent call on Pruitt, a very gifted box/puncher, much overlooked. stay safe, chat soon.
