I've been wanting to make this thread for a while but name anything that is associated with boxing that you think is underrated or overrated. For instance, you can say boxer A's boxing skills are underrated or that boxer B's chin is overrated or that color commentator A is overrated. You get the idea. I'll start it off. Antonio Tarver. Everything about him is underrated.
Overrated: Tarver De La Hoya's greatness David Haye Underrated Bernard Hopkins Tim Bradley How bad the quality of today's boxing is.(there isn't a Hall of Famer who started fighting 10 years ago or later)
Overrated (as a whole, either on boxing forums or by historians): Shane Mosley's lightweight reign Aaron Pryor Jack Dempsey The Gatti-Ward trilogy Hagler-Hearns Teddy Atlas as a trainer Vitali Klitschko Underrated: Lloyd Marshall (not in the Hall of Fame) Michael Spinks (too often remembered for the Tyson disaster other than all the great things he achieved) Eddie Booker (not in the Hall of Fame) Aaron Snowell. Disgraceful performance in Tokyo, but let's not forget the solid work he did after Tokyo with guys like Tim Austin, Julian Jackson, and Frankie Randall. Muhammad Ali's ability to absorb body shots. Maybe not "underrated", but just not talked about enough. Everyone talks about his chin. His ability to take it to the body and come back stronger was more impressive to me than his chin. He got murdered to the body by Frazier in intense heat and still came back strong.
I'll just do boxer for now.. Overrated David Haye (Already claiming to be the best heavyweight and that he's avoided) Yuriorkis Gamboa (By the fans) Joan Guzman (To an extent) Underrated Joshua Clottey Tim Bradley
Pacquiao-Marquez - Overrated as a "bad" decision. It was a close fight no matter who you scored for. Most people that scored for Marquez only had him winning by a point or two, but act like he won by a mile. They treat it like a sure "W" on his resume. Speaking of Marquez, I think he himself is getting overrated as well. Not too long ago, he was losing to Chris John, rallying to beat Jaca, and having an indecisive/controversial fight with Barrera. But he has an even fight with Pazquiao and stops a longtime champion on his last legs, and suddenly he's the best fighter in the world? :think :huh
Holy crap, I agree with almost every one of these!! :good (except perhaps the Gatt-Ward trilogy as overrated) Good calls on Aaron Pryor, Teddy Atlas, Lloyd Marshall, and Aaron Snowell. :good I'd add Kevin Rooney to your list of "overrated". Was the hottest trainer around after he split with Tyson, but he turned out to be even more overhyped than Tyson was. Had some minor success working briefly with Pazienza, but that's it.
Overrated: David Haye Chad Dawson HBO and all of it Amir Khan Underrated: Paul Spadafora Arturo Gatti Diego Corrales(RIP) Showtime and all of it
Underrated: Kessler Adamek Povetkin Dzinziruk Alexeev Overrated: Williams Margarito Peter (in some quarters at least) Taylor Pavlik
I can't imagine how many times I've heard "If Tyson went back to Rooney......". I don't think Rooney was especially good, but they did have good chemistry together. It's easier to look like the next Ray Arcel when you have someone as talented as a young Mike Tyson to train. Rooney was indeed a good trainer for Mike, but he hasn't shown that much otherwise. When people kept saying "man Tyson needs to go back to Rooney" in the late 90s and early 00s....NO! Tyson needs to build a time machine, that's what!
overrated David Haye - People are already calling former HW conternders unworthy to fight him based on 1 fight against a polish tomato can. Kelly Pavlik - Already destined for Middleweight greatness despite obvious flaws and 1 close defense of his MW title and an anihilation of a sitting duck. underrated Antonio Margarito - Picked by some to actually quit against Cotto despite never showing any sign of quitting in 15 years as a welter. Already perceived to be an underdog against Paul Williams, and to to some extent Joshua Clottey despiting koing Cotto. Joe Calzaghe - More than 20 defenses of his title and still undefeated at 36, yet he is written off as a cherry picker.
I would add Marquez to the list of underrated. He schooled John, but should've known never to fight in indonesia. Against a game Jaca he turned brawler and got him out of there, and with MAB he won a close, but decisive decision against a Barrera that was still champion and fought his heart out.
