there was nothing unexpected about that ****...cotto targeting the bad eye and getting the stoppage was how everyone thought it would go...if margarito actually repeated knocking out cotto that would have been a surprise norris-santana 2 was a surprise...that ******* santana hammed it up on some bull****..im glad norris was able to finally rip that title off him on the third try
Cotto was winning in the prediction polls for the rematch. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=364009 That fight was a question mark for me, because I was so unsure how much each fighter had left, and how Margarito's eye would hold up.
Bumping up a 4 1/2 year old thread here as I find it an interesting topic. Some of these surprises are dulled and understandable with hindsight and subsequent career developments, but at the time they were somewhat unexpected. Lewis-Rahman II - I thought this would be a case of a young hungry new champ continuing to improve after gaining confidence from winning the title. I didn't expect Lewis to make it so easy. Ali-Liston II - One round? Liston may have quit? Unthinkable not so long before. Leonard-Duran II - The great Duran QUITS!?!? Holyfield-Bowe II - Bowe was supposed to be the next great champ. Surely the second fight would be a much easier victory for him than the first. BTW, I've always theorized that the reason Bowe made quick defenses against Dokes and Ferguson was because Rock Newman wanted to keep him in the gym and active so he wouldn't grow fat and stagnant during long layoffs. Frazier-Quarry II - Quarry was supposed to be on a roll after 1973 and Joe was supposed to be in the twilight of his career. Frazier's domination surprised. Holyfield-Tyson II - Going in I didn't know who would win, but I was leaning toward a motivated and in-shape Tyson, who showed a good heart in staying in there while supposedly undertrained against Douglas and Holyfield I. After all, Holyfield had recently been stopped by Bowe in their rubber match, and had lost to Moorer 3 years before. So... surprise, Tyson gets himself DQ'd, basically quitting. Ruiz-Holyfield II - Surely the closeness of the first bout was a fluke. Ruiz is a weak-chinned, relatively unskilled fighter. So he beats Holyfield by UD. Lewis-McCall II - Another surprise quit job. I don't think Lewis won this so much as McCall shouldn't have been anywhere near a boxing ring.
That's easy, Barkley beating Hearns by knockout?, there is a chance Barkley outboxing Hearns?, no one expected that.
and Williams vs Martinez 2. I dont think most expected a blowout KO early for Sergio. Williams was an ironman in their first match he took every shot very well. Sergio looked like dynamite in the rematc, very crisp and precise but with power.
Norris-Santana II: Another DQ? Randell-Chavez II: Randell getting the better but not the Technical Decision? McClellan-Jackson II: Jackson blown out FAST!!!
Bowe-Golota II In hindsight, maybe it doesn't seem shocking, but did anyone really think Bowe would last long enough or that Golota would be stupid enough to get DQ'd again? Randall-Coggi II Randall dominated the first fight, and it didn't even appear Coggi deserved a rematch. Then after a few rounds, Coggi pulled a Santana and was taken out on a stretcher after a headbut.
Poor Frankie Randall. Juan Coggi pulled **** like that on several occasions. He would break any rule necessary to get an undeserved win. His fight with Eder Gonzalez may be the single most egregious example of cheating in boxing history. At least Randall got his justified revenge in fight #3.
I could explain it to you, Eddie, but you wouldn't believe it. Look it up on Youtube. The home town corruption of all involved will blow your mind.
Sorry Bert. Forgot I was in the 21st century and could do that. Started to google it and got caught up in how Juan Roldan looks these days. Will watch tonight. See if an Argentine can annoy a Brit. It will go against, ooh, NO historical precedents if that happens.
