Who are the most versatile fighters ever? I'm talking about guys who had multiple facets to their game, guys who could adapt to any opponent in the ring? Sam Langford probably takes the cake imo. Benny Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson are likely the runners up. Michael Spinks could be a lights out bomber in one fight and a beautiful dancer the next. Wilfredo Gomez could bomb and slug like against Zarate and Pintor and then move in and out and box beautifully like against Laporte. Who are some of the others?
good picks so far, especially duran ezzard charles deserves a mention at his best, hagler could box from a distance (sibson), brawl (hearns) or fight in the trenches (mugabi)
Leonard was very versatile. Obviously Robinson was ridiculously comfortable on the back or foot front. Lennox Lewis was effective as either conservative boxer or all out slugger. Carlos Ortiz did a bit of everything, regardless of how pretty it was, he was a complete fighter and a technician. With Hopkins and Hagler, they seem to do one or the other, and whilst capable of doing both, the difference between them and Robinson was how Robinson would change mid fight. It;s also something Joe Calzaghe did against Mikkel Kessler, he switched it up when it wasn't going well. Luis Rodriguez was very versatile.
Luis Rodriguez is a fantastic mention. I'd also add Billy Graham to the discussion. He wasn't truly exceptional in regard to talent (except his atg chin) but he had so many variations on his style that he was hell for everyone and he'd be hell for anyone head to head because he could adjust to give trouble for any style.
