Most Visible Mean Streak in a Fighter

Ali was so full of bull**** back then with that Black racist **** and all. That was back then before they canonized him into St. Ali (with Thomas Hauser as his St. Paul). That black muslim **** excites and turns on liberal sports writers who would have condemned a white guy for expressing similar stuff from a white racist angle.

 

Yeah, he spewed out some bull****. There's no doubt about that.

But I don't really think he was a man filled with hate. If you're in your early twenties and had grown up in a world where whites were considered second class (I suppose you're white, as am I - blond and blue eyed, the ****ning whole package) it's not wholly unconceivable that you might turn a bit hostile against blacks.

With that said, Ali said some stupid, horrible things and acted horribly at time as well.

 

Duran .

 

Ali was the greatest promoter of his own fights. Alot of the bull**** he spewed was to build the gate. He said something to that effect at the time, more or less: "Half the people who come to my fights come to see me win, the other half come to see me get killed. But they come." As far as the "black muslim ****", he's still a muslim, though he did disassociate from the black muslims who were then trying to use him for their own interests.

As far as "black" thing, and I'm not black myself, black people had a right to be bugged back then.

 

Dempsey had a lot of backroom fights when he was hobo-ing around.

He was a bad dude in his prime.

When he cold-cocked Sharkey as Sharkey complained to the ref about a low blow, Dempsey remarked: "What should I have done, sent him a telegram?"

 

If I had to pick one name, it would have to be Roberto Duran. I just can't forget the Davey Moore and Ray Lampkin fights. There may be others, but he gets my vote.

As for Ali ... yes, he did show a mean streak against Terrell and also in the first Patterson fight. But in both these fights, reasons not related to boxing or his normal nature were the cause for his vicious behaviour. Generally, he was not more mean than he had to be to get the job done.

 

Thanks mate, watch Holmes get down and dirty and dig from within when in trouble. You can really see that fire and determination come out. He's a serious mofo in there.

 

Ali vs Terrel clearly showed his mean side . His pretty rcude remarks to Frazier for which Frazier has not forgiven him till this day also showed his dark side.

Contrary to popular belief Ali was a bit of an ******* at times thought this has been largely suppressed by the hero worship of him.

 

That does not make him a mean fighter only a dtermined one.

Holmes could pull out a victory on guts and will power alone.

But Holmes never hurt someone in the Ring for no other reason that he wanted to hurt them like Ali and Duran did.

 

Watch him fight mate, watch him talking to and threatening the likes of Snipes almost non stop. Watch the hatred in his delivery. When in trouble he often came back with a hatred that is easy to see. Of course Holmes wanted to hurt them, to put them away - they were trying to hurt him and take what he thought rightfully belonged to himself. I agree Ali is similar, both are mean fukkers when it comes down to it. Duran's early career intensity is dulled by his latter career inconsistency and flatness for me. Tho past his best fights such as SRL II, Benitez etc bring him back some. He still had it within at these points as proven by miraclulous comebacks.

Holmes is a natural hard case, look at him leaping over cars to boot Berbick etc, and read some of Bills stories. Holmes for me is a genuine bad arse.

 

His handling of Terrel and the things he said to Frazier always comes up in documentaries of Ali, so I wouldn't really say it gets suppressed.

But, yeah, Ali had a dark side. But still, I don't think it defined his career. Normally he would be careful not to do any permanent damage to opponents he had in a helpless state, and some times he was actually critized for not being tough enough in those situations.

 

That is what i mean when pushed to the limit he came back to hurt you.

Holmes did not torture you because of a personal dislike he would hurt you when he got in trouble and had to rely on guts and will alone to pull out a win.

A guy like Duran would torture you for no other reason then that he could.

therin lies the difference between a tough guy and a guy with a sadistic streak.

 

I think we are more talking fighting styles than anything. Holmes was a jab first boxer where as Duran mixed it up. IMO Holmes is a brawler who just happened to be born with a boxers physique and skillset. If Holmes was born with Tyson's attributes and physical skills i shudder to think what we may have seen. Holmes stopped many many people that had never been stopped. I think he is overlooked and underrated in the mean streak stakes simply due to style.

 

Have a look at Holmes punching with mean intentions after getting dropped here, look at him talking. After Snipes dropped him the raw side of Holmes is very apparent. He wants to knock Snipes clean out and responds to the danger with great fire and intent.
