:rofl :happy :happy :rofl Lazlo Papp. Turned pro to late then the communists outlawed pro boxing. Kirkland Laing. Beat Roberto Duran. Sure he was unfoccused at the time but even an unfoccused Duran is a scary prospect in the early 80s. Woefull lack of discipline and a tendency to get stoned before a fight couldn't of helped.
I agree that was a huge waste, after him I would add, 1) Tyson, even though he was champion he could have gone down as the one of the greatest, and richest ever. he had it all and blew it. I doubt if he will live another 5 years. 2) Max Baer 3) Riddick Bowe 4) Bobby Cyz as a middle 5) Sean O'Grady 6) Gerry Cooney 7) Mitch Green 8) Tommy Morrsion 9) Buster Mathias (senior) 10) Mark Breland Thats just off the top of my head, there are many. many more.
I actually think both the Klitschko's have fought much better than their actual talents. Which is minimal in my opinion.
Even on relative terms, I don't think the argument holds much water. Many people consider Roy to be a top 20 fighter, many others have him top 10. The only reason he isn't more highly regarded is because of the two KO losses at the end of his career. These losses were a result of him challenging himself and coming up short. I don't see that as a waste of talent.
All of mine have some fatal flaw that resulted an all their other great attributes going to waste: (in no particular order), Andrej Golota - He has had so many bizarre fights and unusual sequences of events, but he was a brilliant talent. He was making Bowe look poor in both their fights before a few moments of madness ruined all his hard work and was dominating Micheal Grant before giving up in the 10th. He lost to Ruiz and drew to Byrd in two pretty dodgy decisions. Naseem Hamed - Love him or hate him, at 122 he was a superb talent. Prior to winning his first title, with everything still to prove he was considerably better than he was later in his career. From the point he won the WBO belt his perfomances steadily got worse until the end of his career. A perfect example of talent without the hard graft to back it up. Zab Judah - Probably one of the boxers with the fastest hands P4P today, a fair bit of power, good reactions and defence but a total lack of consitency, woeful concentration and bad temper ruins it for him. For me he is one of the most annoying boxers to watch, his fantastic physical ability he shows flashes of greatness but then his psychological weaknesses and total inability to adapt let him down.
Good pick. Heavyweights, recent: Bowe, Mitch Green, Tyson, Golota (Physically talented, mentally nuts) Pinklin Thomas was drug addict, in and out of rehab. I can keep going, about 50% of recent heavyweights throw away talent. Pazianza might seem a unusual choice, but I'll put him in. Reason: Steroids (IMO) he made great comeback at 154, and looked better than ever winning that title, after overcoming injuries from accident that almost ended carreer. Rooney had improved him, added left-hook (Paz used to slap with it) to his arsenal. Instead of staying at 154, he kept bodybuilding up to 168 division, and weighing in by fight time at a crazy 180.
