Relative to how good he COULD have been? I consider him and Starling a waste of talent. Curry had talent on par with and perhaps higher than SRL IMO. He is not even a top 100 fighter though.
To tell you the truth I think JMM could have been so much more than his resmue states. He would have given a prime Morales and prime Barrera hell and should have a couple Morales fights on his resmue. He kinda reminds me of this generations Chava with his technique.
It wasn't bad management alone. David never had any stamina and was never going to have any stamina. Excellent skills, great talent, but he was never going to be able to fight at his best for more than a few rounds. Not his fault, its just how it is.
Meldrick Taylor. PBF. Zab Judah. Andrew Golota. Riddick Bowe Mike Tyson RJJ Vargas Calzaghe James Toney
I feel putting Meldrick Taylor on these lists is a disservice to a fighter who took on the best from 140-154 and was a two division world champion.
Recently Dominick Guinn seems to have fit the bill. Good power, ability to take a shot and boxing skills coupled with a huge mental block that led to laziness every time the pressure was on. Less recently, Fernando Vargas. ATG great abilities coupled with a complete inability to lift his mind out of Oxnard and the mindset that he grew up in.
Corrie Sanders of South Africa was the best southpaw heavyweight I have ever seen. He had the most natural talent of any heavyweight ever. I followed his career for years. He was blackballed, not allowed to fight for the gold medal, was avoided by the best. Corrie could have been heavyweight champion for years. Corrie hardly ever trained either. His straight left you did not see, fast, powerful, one punch knockout power. It's a shame he was blackballed for so many years. It's also a shame he did not train, but that happens with so many naturally talented fighters, of course, when a boxer is blackballed from fighting it does get depressing.
Wasted talent? His talent is what brought him to where he was, and he's overrated in that area at that. He's an overachiever if anything, with the help of management that looks out for his best interests.
