What fighters had a lot of ability but due to lack of motivation ,drugs , alcohol or mental problems didn't achieve what they could have . I'm sure the list could be long but here's a short one; 1. Ike Ibeabuchi, 2. Edwin Valero 3. Frankie Randall 4. Tony Ayala 5. Gerry Cooney 6. Johnny Tapia Even though Randall ( R.I.P) was a 3 time jr welterweight champion had he had better management and trainers who could have kept him away from the drugs and the leeches he could have been a 3 division champ in my opinion.
ibeabuchi? Yeah he and Ayala hurt themselves and did it to themselves it looks like Cooney? The right handpicking and he could have gone much further.
Let me elaborate on Gerry. Match him with Weaver or Dokes in 1982 instead of Holmes. Coetzee? If he has to fight Witherspoon that is a problem, but he could hang the Tubbs guys maybe. He was overrated a bit but maybe fighting the lesser guys could have developed his skills better. Although he lost to Holmes and that took a lot out of him.
Same goes for most who were thrown to the lions too early in their career, Davey Moore Jr with Duran, David Reid and Fernando Vargas with Tito etc, makes you wonder how their careers would've gone if they fought lesser opponents and worked their way up.
That is true. But with Cooney, you felt even if he would have fought Weaver and other guys, Holmes and Spinks and Tyson would have always been above his level.. He would have improved, but would he have been at that level.
Rigo has to be up there considering his spent his physical prime in the amateurs. If he turns pro in 2000 when he was 20, we might have seen a truly exceptional prime. Instead, he turns pro at damn near 30... We probably never saw the best version of him.
Nipper Pat Daly, and it wasn't even his fault, which makes it sadder. Had the potential to be Britains ATG No.1, and he was on his way early. Bad management totally ****ed him up at an extremely early age.
Good call, rushed into many hard fights too early, fought to often no disregard for his health, very brave manager !
