Whats the most world title defenses in one year of this era?

With GGG Saying he will fight twice more after macklin providing he keeps winning i think its great to see.

It really doesnt happen enough. 5 times a year isnt really that much for a professional athlete.

Its made me even more of a fan of his and i hope he keeps up this activity.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other fighters that defended world titles more time in one year and what the most defenses in one year.

Im talking about in the last 10 years or so.

    Thanks guys

for high stakes fights with 3 month training camps , theres a low low limit

Plus its the level of competition also, Ali could do oa european tour and beat lots of guys but thats not happening today, 3 massive payday superfights with long long training camps is the best that can be done and even that is rare.

Manny Pacquaio beat Oscar, Hatton and Cotto within 12 momnths

thats a massive feat today back to back to back superfights

Eubank back in the day was scheduled to defend his strap eight times in one year on Sky but lost to Collins in the fifth fight.

  6. I know this wasn't the question but felt like chucking it into the conversation

Mike Tyson fought 28 times in 2 years from his debut to sparking Trevor berbick for the world title
Very impressive even including all the blast outs, that's some intensive work

Julio Cesar Chavez was probably the last of the 'great' champions fighting often in both title and non title bouts.

In a ten month period between May 1989 and March 1990, Chavez beat Roger Mayweather, Sammy Fuentes, 44-0 Alberto Cortes and Meldrick Taylor in title fights, as well as winning three non title fights, one of which was against the world ranked Kenny Vice.

James Toney in his Super Middleweight pomp fought often too. In a 17 month period between February 1993 and July 1994, Toney won title bouts against Iran Barkey, Tony Thornton, Tim Littles and Carl Williams and had seven non title fights, some of which were against decent fringe contenders (Thomas and Hembrick).

Haha it's ok. I agree with what you said. There's more to my username than the fact I'm a Floyd fan.

The Ultimate year of Boxing was 1937 when Henry Armstrong went 27-0...

  14. That I know to be true and there were many others almost as prolific
That kind of thing makes me wonder how that is physically and mentally possible

In 1919 Harry Greb went 45-0... 10 of those wins against men who today are in the IBHOF.

That will be pretty hard to top, I think!
