    I did a little checking and saw some photos of Wells taken in the 1920's and I think these two film clips are of Wells--both of them. The color one seems to be from a 1943 movie but remember the intro might have been filmed a few years earlier. Britain had technicolor films from 1937. I think the Rank mascot goes back to the late thirties. Perhaps one of our British (or Irish) posters has exact information.

    I tried reading some stuff but only found Wells to be the man who hits the gong, but like you said...maybe someone will have some more information on it.
